Literacy Tutor Workshop Slated A tutor training workshop will he " " ? sponsored by the Brunswick County Literacy Council Sept. 17 and 18 at the council's office in Supply. Trainer Rich Dixon will lead the 10- hour workshop based on the one on-one Laubach Way To Reading, said Julie Wallace, a VISTA volun teer. Hours will be 6 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. Friday, Sept. 17, and 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 18. The training session is free. The event is coordinated by repre sentatives of various social service agencies and hospitals in Horry County, S.C. It features information on a variety of issues ? social, leg islative and personal enhancement. The target audience is individuals age 55 and older and social workers, who can receivc continuing educa tion credits for participation. Jack Holt Boger of Rock Hill, S.C., will give the update on health care reform. He is a member of the National Legislative Council of the American Association of Retired Persons (AARP). The Rev. George Lovell, a retired minister, will present his popular talk, "The Abominations and Desolations of Retirement." Other topics will include spiritual ity and aging, assisting older victims of alcohol and prescription drug use, home safety, personal safety and se curity, and information on Medicare and Medicaid. July 31, in a 6 p.m. ceremony offici ated by the Rev. Lester English. The bride is the daughter of Sylvia Pace and Gregg Warren, both of Ash. The groom is the son of Marie King of Ash and the late Rev. Nelson King. Given in marriage and escorted by her father, the bride wore a white, floor-length gown with a sweatheart neckline and chapcl-leugth train. It featured a Fitted bodice with simu lated pearls, re-embroidered lace motifs and insets of sheer illusion in the yoke, tapered sleeves and stand up collar. A spray of fabric flowers and simulated pearls accented her finger tip-length veil of illusion. She carricd a bouquet of white daisies, peach roses and babies' breath. Andrea Simmons, cousin of the bride, was maid of honor. Freida Babson, sister of the groom, was bridesmaid. Flower girls were Brittany Sell ers, cousin of the bride, and Racheal King, niece of the groom. State, Southport History Classes Are Offered By BCC A North Carolina history course will be offered by Brunswick Com munity College at the Southport campus on Lord Street during the fall quarter. The course will cover the state's history from 1920-70. Classes will start Monday, Sept. 13, from 10 a.m. until noon. Instruc tor will be Susan Carson of South port, who has been teaching local history classes at the college for more than ten years. Carson also will teach a course in Southport's history for the same pe riod at the Southport campus during the fall quarter. The Southport class es will be held Thursdays from 7-9 p.m. beginning Sept. 9. People interested in one or both of the courses should attend the first session of the class and help set an agenda. Because of budget cuts at the college, several new rules gov erning community service courses are in place. Those rules will be out lined at the first sessions of each course and important decisions will be made by the participants, accord ing to a news release.
