PROGRAM SET NOV. 6-8
Fort's Role In WWII To Be Recalled
BY SUSAN USHER
Mosl visitors associate Fort
Fisher with the role that won it a
major place in American history
forever ? the last bastion of the
Confederacy.
But for a few days in November,
visitors will be invited to recall an
other era in the historic site's mili
tary career: World War II. On Nov.
6-8, special activities and exhibits
will mark the 50th anniversary of
the height of Fort Fisher's utiliza
tion during the war.
Wilmington's area military
bases, its deep-water port and ship
yards helped bring Southeastern
North Carolina into the war and out
of the Depression.
The largest U.S. Army encamp
ment was at Camp Davis, near
Holly Ridge, on land that is now
owned by Camp I^ejeune, home of
the 2nd Division, U.S. Marine
Corps. Infantrymen from Camp
Davis were garrisoned on the Fort
Fisher penisula for anti-aircraft
gunnery training.
Some of those veterans, as well
as other World War II veterans
from all services, are expected to
return to the area for the program
and a reunion at Fort Fisher, a por
! tion of which is being co-sponsored
I by the North Carolina National
? Guard Training Center on Carolina
