PEOPLE IN THE NEWS Milton Colemon Picked To Chair National Panel Brunswick County Extension Director Milton Coleman has been named chairman of the Extension Programs Com mittee of the National Asso ciation of County Agricul tural Agents. The two-year appointment was made last week at the as- COLEMAN sociation's annual conference in Baltimore, Md. He will be responsible for coordi nation of four professional improve ment programs, including the Environmental Protection Through Responsible Use of Pesticides pro gram, the "Search of Excellence" professional papers competition; de velopment of the Applied Science and Technology Seminar; and seek ing out programs for the associa tion's annual meeting that focus on Extension's national initiatives. These include water quality, waste management, food safety and pro viding educational programs for young people with behavioral prob lems. Coleman will share an informa tion network with contacts in every county in the country. Babson Honored Larissa Babson of Shallotte was honored recent- .. ly at a pinning f ceremony for graduates of ra ciiuiogic tech nology at Wake ? Technical Com- 'J munity College. She was one of 17 graduates to receive a pin. Radiologic BABSON technology is a two-year associate degree program. Graduates function as medical radiographers and pro vide patient services using imaging equipment. Back From Persian Gulf Navy Airman Recruit Alvin R. Burney, son of Carol A. and Alvin R. Burney Sr. of Supply recently re turned aboard the aircraft carrier USS Nimitz, homeported in Bremer ton, Wash., from a six-month de ployment to the Western Pacific and Persian Gulf as part of the aircraft carrier USS Nimitz Battle Group. While operating in the Persian Gulf, the battle group completed 19 exercises with various Gulf nations in continuing efforts to develop and strengthen political and military ties with countries of the region. The 1989 graduate of West Brunswick High School joined the Navy in August 1992. Aboard Guadalcanal Navy Petty Officer 1st Class An drew M. Albright recently departed aboard the amphibious assault ship USS Guadalcanal, homeported in Norfolk, Va., for a six-month Medi terranean Sea deployment as part of the USS America Joint Task Group. Albright's wife Brenda is the daughter of Fred E. and Inge Arnold of Bolivia. The group will relieve the USS Theodore Roosevelt Aircraft Carrier Battle Group, its embarked Special Purpose Marine Air-Ground Task Force and the USS Saipan Amiph ibious Ready Group. Albright is one of 12,000 sailors and Marines assigned to the task group. It includes two amphibious assault ships, two cruisers, two de stroyers, two frigates, two submar ines, one replenishment oiler and one ammunition ship. Aircraft squadrons include seven fixed-wing squadrons and one Navy and three Marine Corps helicopter squadrons. The 1979 graduate of South Brunswick High School joined the Navy in January 1985. Off To Japan Navy Fireman Recruit William D. Davis of Winnabow recently report ed for duty aboard the aircraft carri er USS Independence, forward de ployed to Yokosuka, Japan. Davis is the son of Jane S. and William D. Davis Sr. of Bell Swamp Road. The 1992 graduate of South Brunswick High School joined the Navy in February 1993. Graduates From Program Michelle j. Deployment Ends Marine Lance Cpl. Jeffrey S. Calderon recently returned from a successful six-month deployment to the Mediterranean Sea, Persian Gulf and Indian Ocean with 24th Marine Expeditionary Unit, Camp Lejeune, embarked aboard ships of the USS Wasp Central Command Amphibi ous Ready Group. Calderon's wife Margaret is the daughter of Nina G. Stanley of Bypass Way, Bolivia. Also deployed was Marine Lance Cpl. Charles L. Wilson, son of James L. and Carol A. Wilson of Wedgewood Drive, Leland. The group deployed ahead of its regularly scheduled Mediterranean Sea deployment to support the hu manitarian efforts of Operation Re store Hope, providing food to the people of Somalia. While deployed, Calderon visited Bosaaso, Somalia; Jebel Ali, Abu Dhabi and Dubai, United Arab Emirates; Kuwait, Bahrain; Rota, Malaga and Benidorm, Spain; Rhodes, Greece; and Toulon, France. Calderon is a 1989 graduate of Thomas A. Edison High School of Jamaica; he joined the Marine Corpe in February 1990. Wilson is a 1990 graduate of North Brunswick High School.
