The greenery accents the neatness of their Tudor-style home. CLUB BRIEFS Calabash Elks It's fast becoming a staple of the fall season, especially for those looking for handmade items. Calabash Elks Lodge No. 2679 will hold its annual His and Hers Fall Festival Saturday, Sept. 25, at the lodge on Carter Drive in Calabash. The event is the largest fund-raiser of the year for the lodge community activities program. Doors will be open from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., with a light lunch available at 11:30 a.m., said Elk John Ziefel. The Kountry Kitchen will feature a variety of homemade delicacies. Freshly baked sweets, woodcrafts, paper twist crafts, novelty crafts, books and a "white elephant" booth loaded with "treasurer," he said. Harper Is Speaker David Harper, a local photograph er and club member, will be the fea tured speaker when the Brunswick Bird Club holds its first meeting of the new club year Wednesday, Sept. 15, at 7:30 p.m. The meeting will be held in the meeting room of Atlantic Telephone Membership Corp. on N.C. 130 west of Shallotte. Harper will give a slide presenta tion on "Recent Bird Walks." Anyone interested in nature and the environment is welcome. For moie information contact Marcia Warring, 579-9474. Artists Resume Meetings The Waterway Art Association will resume its meeting schedule with a business session Wednesday, Sept. 15, at 1:30 p.m. at the home of Margaret Noland, 1899 Norwood St., Schooners' Point, Seaside. Shell Club Plans Tour The Beachcombers Shell Club of the South Brunswick Islands will begin the fall season with a Tuesday, Sept. 14, tour of Bird Island near Sunset Beach. Participants are to meet at the west end dune crossover at 40th and Main Streets at 1 1 :45 a.m., and to bring a lunch if they wish, said spokesman Joy Wood. Carpooling is recom mended since parking is limited. Seniors To Cook Out A cookout for Senior Citizens of the Holden Beach area is planned Monday, Sept. 13, at 6 p.m. at the Lockwood Folly Community Build ing on Stanbury Road, Supply, said spokesman Ann Robinson. Brierwood Women Meet The Brierwood Ladies Club will hold its First meeting of the 1993-94 season Monday, Sept. 13, at 7 p.m. in the Brierwood Clubhouse. This meeting will be devoted to getting acquainted and having some fun, said Alice Micali. All female residents of Brierwood Estates are welcome. WAVES Chapter Meets The Azalea Anchors of WAVES National will hold its first meeting of the season Sept. 11 at 11 a.m. at Shoney's Restaurant on Oleander Drive, Wilmington. Plans will be discussed for the up coming year's activities. All former, retired and present Navy, Naval Reserve, WAVES, Coast Guard, Navy Nurse Corps and Women Marines are eligible for membership. Qualified women are Dr. L'Tanya Webb Sloan, daughter of Mrs. and Mrs. John H. Sloan, and granddaughter of Mr. and Mrs. Ike Pierce, graduated, receiving the degree of Doctor of Education on July 24, 1993 from Clark Atlanta University in Atlanta, Georgia. Formerly an educator in Brunswick County Schools. Dr. Sloan was featured in the Wilmington Morning Star News. January 24, 1984, in an article enti tled. "Educator L'Tanya Sloan Seizes Each Minute Firmly '...and "seizes it' she does! She graduated from North Brunswick High in 1973. Upon completion of her B.A. in English from University of North Carolina at Wilmington, she taught Senior English at North Brunswick for two years before being promoted to central office administration. She served Brunswick County Schools as Migrant Education Director. Staff Development Director, and Middle Schools Supervisor for 7 years white completing requirements at UNCWfor masters degrees in Educational Administration, and Atlanta Public Schools offered her a position as an elementary school principal in 1986. While in Atlanta. Dr. Sloan served as an elementary school principal and as an educational consultant and guest speaker on critical issues facing the educational community. She trained teachers and administrators in over 52 schools in Atlanta. During her tenure as elementary school principal, she completed require ments for the degree of Specialist in Education, a 6th year degree and graduated on May 20. 1991 from Clark Atlanta University. Presently. Dr. Sloan is Begional Sales Manager with an educational soft ware company based in Tel Aviv, Israel. She is responsible for managing sales in N.C.. S.C.. Va.. Md? Fl. and Washington. D.C. She spends her spare time analyzing data for school districts which prove that students are being adequately "exposed" to what they are tested. She trains teachers and administrators to "raise the bar' for teaching students by teaching them at or above their instructional level The application of her instructional model has caused many schools to achieve new levels of success! Dr. Sloan credits her success in the field of education to the strong teach ing and guidance of her parents. John and Eliza Sloan, and to her teach ers in Wilmington and Leland who helped her believe that she could achieve anything she desired. She has two children. Bubin Terry Sloan. New Arbor Day Members Receive Oaks Ten free live oak trees will be giv en to eaeh person who joins the National Arbor Day Foundation this month. The free trees arc part of the non profit foundation's Trees for Ameri can campaign. Live oaks, which grow well at the coast, were selected for the cam paign "because of the shade and spe cial beauty they will give your home," said John Rosenow, the foundation's executive director. '"Live oaks grow rapidly when young and may live to be centuries old." The trees will be shipped postpaid at the right time for planting be tween Oct. 15 and Dec. 10 with en closed planting instructions.
