Angling Results Mixed As Fishermen Await Fall Spots BY SUSAN USUI, w BY SUSAN USHER While continuing their wait for cooler seawater temperatures and the start of the real fall season, area fishermen are managing some de cent end-of-summer catches. An autumn nip in the air over the weekend brought anglers out in larg er numbers, but only a few of the fv ? _ anxiously-awaited yellow-bellied WEEKLY FISHING REPORT spots. Captain Pete's "It seems to be picking up a little bit." was the prognosis by Travis Elliott at Captain Pete's Marina at Holden Beach. He said surf anglers were catch ing some blue fish, with some spots and whiting showing up in the Intracoastal Waterway. This past weekend, he said not too many people made it offshore, but those who did brought in black bass, as well as three kings. "With this cool weather, when the water temperature drops, the spots will move in." he said. "We had a promising sight of them this week end." Sea Mist Camping Resort Spots were also showing up in the catches at Sea Mist Camping Resort on the waterway at Brick Landing, along with some mullet and a smat tering of other fish, reported Nellie Harrell. "It's looking better," she said. Ocean Isle Marina Ken Shipley at Ocean Isle Marina said one woman caught a 32-pound king off the Ocean Isle Beach Pier this past weekend ? one week too late after fishing in the South Brunswick Islands King Classic without success. Flounder, spots and sea trout are "showing up good," Shipley said, with some 8- and 9-pound flounder caught in the waterway. For two consecutive days angerls reported good catches of sea trout and drum. "Everybody seems to be enjoying it," he said. Pier Fishing Lingering high seawater tempera tures are also influencing local pier fishing. However. Ann Bright at Holden Beach Pier said anglers over the weekend caught a mix of blues, whiting, spots, Spanish and king mackerel. Dave Bowser of Holden Beach caught a 16 3/4-pound king. On Monday, a few blues were hit ting. At Ocean Isle Beach. Curtis Williamson said anglers "have been catching a few all along," including spots and blues. "The trouble with the fishing," he said, "is that the water temperature is still 84 degrees. What we need is cooler weather. I believe it will start picking up around the 15th or 20th. But we had a lot of people out here trying Saturday." This Week's Tide Table SEPTEMBER HIGH LOW Day Date A_M. P.M. A.M. RM.
