DOUG t UTTER Tops On Tennis Ladder The Shallottc Tennis Ladder recently concluded its summer season with Robin Dale (left) finishing first and Ray DeVries placing sec ond. Coordinator Jerry Small is planning a fall tennis ladder. SPORTING SCENE West Brunswick's Bummy Is Murder On Stallions In sports, there are always certain players who perform exceptionally well against certain teams. West Brunswick halfback Steve "Bummy" Holmes probably wishes he could play against South Columbus every Friday night. Bummy has been murder on the Stallions. In two games against South Columbus, he has rushed for 397 yards and scored eight touchdowns. It all started last November when Holmes rushed for a career-high 272 yards and four TDs in the first round of the state playoffs. The shifty and speedy senior added to his numbers last Friday with 125 yards rushing and another four TDs. By now, the Stallions have probably dressed their tackling dummies in green jerseys with the number 5 on the back. If they can't tackle Holmes in person, at least they can take out their frustrations on his likeness. Doug Rutter Sports Editor Balanced Backfield Despite Bummy's impressive numbers the last few weeks. West Brunswick is not a one-back team. The Trojans feature a well-balanced rushing attack, giving opportunities to each of its three starting backs. Through five games. Holmes has amassed 380 yards rushing and eight touchdowns. Halfback William Stanley has 318 yards and four TDs, and fullback Michael Lance has 254 yards and five TDs. The balanced running attack is important because it prevents opposing defenses from focusing on stopping one running back. If they do. West has two other backs to go to. The Trojans also have a capable corps of backup running backs includ ing James Morgan, Ty Brown, Neil Warren, Greg Gause and Dexter Bass. They can carry the mail almost as well as the starters. Although West Brunswick likes to run the ball 40 to 50 times a game, the Trojans do have the talent to loosen up opposing defenses with an occa sional pass. Eric Johnson, in his first season as West's starting quarterback, has completed 13 of 28 passes for 271 yards and thrown three long touchdown passes so far. Johnson has only tossed one interception this year. And that came in the season opener against Conway when the Tigers picked off an attempted two point conversion pass. As if West's full-house backfield isn't enough, Johnson also is a threat to run. He's carried 16 times for 79 yards this year, for an average of 5 yards per carry. Every Game Counts Now that conference play has started, every football game is an impor tant one for teams hoping to qualify for the state playoffs. The Waccamaw Conference will send two 3A teams and one 2A team to the playoffs this November. Playoff berths are awarded based on overall record within the conference. West Brunswick, South Brunswick and Pender are the league's 3A teams, and two of the three will go to the playoffs. Barring a miracle, it should be the Trojans and Cougars. That would mark the first time that two Brunswick County high school football teams made the state playoffs in one season. Making the playoffs is one thing, surviving more than one round or two is another. Winning the conference championship is the real prize because league champs travel less come playoff time. Eagles Soaring While we're on the subject of football, has anyone noticed that my beloved Philadelphia Eagles are off to another fast start? The Birds are 3-0, tied with the New York Giants for first place in the NFC East. I really don't know what to think. The Eagles have become notorious for starting fast and hitting the wall when the temperature dips below 70. Dallas will win the division, but I hope the Eagles can at least make the playoffs. And by the way, my first season in the TMFL Fantasy Football League is going well. The Carolina Coneheads were 2-1 and leading the league in scoring going into Sunday's games. The name Coneheads was not my idea, but for some reason 1 like it. 0 1 I I 1 I i I I s i I 1 i I Timothy P. Stevens, Tony Oates and Juan Williams scored two touch downs each to lead Clinton- to a 47 27 victory over visiting South Brunswick last Friday in a non-con ference high school football game. Stevens, one of the top high school football prospects in south eastern North Carolina, rushed for 174 yards against a Cougar team that had yielded just 12 points in its first three games. Leading South Brunswick were quarterback Jeff Simon, who com pleted 11 of 16 passes for 2(X) yards and two touchdowns. Halfback O.J. Morris had 59 yards rushing and full back Terry Galloway scored twice. Clinton jumped out to a 14-0 lead in the first three minutes of the game as Stevens raced 75 yards for a touchdown on the Dark Horses' sec ond play from scrimmage. On the ensuing kickoff, Clinton's Williams stripped the ball from a South Brunswick kick returner and scooted 1 1 yards for a TD. South Brunswick got on the board with a nine-play, 58-yard drive to paydirt The key play was a 31 -yard pass from Simon to Lewis Vaught, who had six receptions in the game for 143 yards. Galloway scored from 1 yard out, and the Cougars trailed 14-6 with 4:49 left in the first quarter. Clinton humped its lead to 21-6 early in the second period. Oates scored on a 1-yard plunge to cap a 12-play, 69-yard drive by the Dark Horses. Following a fumble recovery at the Clinton 43-yard line. South Brunswick drove for its second score of the night. Galloway dove in from the 1-yard line to trim the Horses' lead to 21-12 with 3:54 be fore halftime. Clinton scored 85 seconds later on a 16-yard scramble by quarter back Kenny Culbreth. The OB also had a 47-yard scramble to set up the touchdown run. Coach Bill Hewett's Cougars pulled to within 27-19 with an 80 yard drive just before halftime. Simon threw 41 yards to Vaught for the TD, and Oscar Roberts kicked the extra point. Clinton opened the second half as strong as it began the first half as Stevens took the opening kickoff and ran 100 yards down the right sideline for his second touchdown of the night. With 3:48 left in Ihe third quarter, the Dark Horses got a 56-yard touchdown run by Williams for a 41-19 lead. Oates scored on a 1-yard run early in the fourth quarter to put the game out of reach. South Brunswick added a late touchdown. Simon threw a 7-yard scoring pass to Izesla Brown, and the Cougars tacked on two points with a Simon pass to Rodney Willoughby for the final margin. South Brunswick (3-1) will open Waccamaw 2A/3A Conference play this Friday with a home game against West Columbus. Clinton, which improved to 4-0, plays this week at Smithfield-Selma. The Dark Horses will open play in the East Central 2A Conference on Oct. 8 at James Kenan. THE YARDSTICK South Bruns. The Lady Trojans did not drop a set as they improved their conference record to 5-1 and overall mark to 6-3. Jennifer Simmons, JoAnna Barber, Jessica Robertson, Blair Milligan, Yarbi Lemon and Allison Hardee won their singles matches. In doubles competition, Robertson and Milligan teamed up to win their match 8-0. Simmons and Mandy Redwine also won in doubles, along with Hardee and Tracy Kirtley. "It was an enjoyable match because it gave a lot of younger players a chance to play," West Brunswick Coach Martie Gillis said. In conference action last Wednesday, West Brunswick defeated arch rival South Brunswick 9-0 at Boiling Spring Lakes. The Lady Cougars forced two matches to three sets, and West needed tiebreakers to win two other matches. ? "South Brunswick is greatly improved from last year and as the scores indicate they gave our team a good battle," Gillis said. "I believe my team may have under estimated them." West Brunswick was scheduled to host league foe Pender on Tuesday. The Lady Trojans will entertain St. Pauls in a non-conference match Thursday. West Brunswick is currently in second place in the Waccamaw Conference behind undefeated Whiteville. The Lady Trojans will host the Wolfpack next Monday, Oct. 4.
