Holden Paving Project Expanded
BY DOUG RUTTER
The unpavcd section of Brunswick Avenue has been
added to a major paving project at Holden Beach that in
cludes five other streets.
Following a public hearing last Wednesday, town
commissioners voted to include the dirt portion of
Brunswick Avenue East as part of a project being done
by F&R Development of Supply.
Interim Town Manager Gus Ulrich said the addition
al work will cost about $5,500, bringing the total esti
mated project cost to $63,973.
Also included in the paving project are Marlin
Drive, Lumberton Street, Sandspur Lane, Sandpiper
Lane and Sand Dune l^ane. Work was expected to begin
this week.
A majority of the property owners along each of the
streets petitioned the town to pave the roads. Once the
work is finished, owners will be billed for 60 percent of
the cost and the town will pay 40 percent.
Sidewalks On Hold
While street paving work should be completed this
fall. Holden Beach may not be able to continue its re
sume sidewalk construction for a few months.
Ulrich said last week the town will need a major
Coastal Area Management Act (CAMA) permit before
continuing walkway construction on Ocean Boulevard
because the work will disturb more than one acre of
property.
"It's kind of ridiculous but those are the laws we're
working with," Ulrich told the town board.
He said it will take 50 to 75 days to receive the per
mit from the N.C. Division of Coastal Management.
Holden Beach will then seek new bids for the project.
Town commissioners plan to build a sidewalk from
Rothschild Street to Blockade Runner. After that, they
haven't decided which area will be done next on Ocean
Boulevard West.
Holden Beach officials plan to make a decision at
their Oct. 4 meeting since they have to coordinate the
project with Brunswick Electric Membership Corp.,
which is burying power lines on the island.
Other Business
In other business last week, commissioners:
?Adopted an ordinance prohibiting smoking in all town
buildings except in the police department break room
and in certain areas of the public works garage.
?Agreed to discuss at the Oct. 4 meeting possible
changes to the town's lot clearing ordinance, which re
quires that all lots be maintained so as not to present a
health hazard.
?Took no action after meeting for approximately one
hour in executive session. Board members discussed a
real estate matter, litigation and a personnel matter.
?Postponed discussion of Holden Beach's next step re
garding the cable television franchise authority. Com
missioners Jim Fournier and David Sandifer are expect
ed to make a recommendation at the Oct. 4 meeting.
No Injuries Are Reported In
Fishing Boat Fire At Southport
There was minor damage, but no
one injured, when a 44-foot com
mercial fishing boat caught fire at
the American Fish Co. dock in
Southport Wednesday morning
(Sept. 22), according to BMCS J D.
Arndt. officer in charge of the U.S.
Coast Guard Station at Oak Island.
The station received a call from
the Brunswick County Emergency
Communications (911) Center at
about 5:30 a.m. reporting that the
vessel American III was on fire. A
41 -foot patrol boat was dispatched
to the scene and arrived to find that
the Southport Fire Department had
extinguished the fire.
The Coast Guard boat maintained
a "re-flash watch" near the
COAST GUARD
REPORT
American III to assure that the fire
did not flare up again, Arndt said.
On Sept. 20 at about 4:30 p.m. the
station received a call from a pass
ing vessel reporting that another
boat was disabled and adrift on the
Holden Beach side of Lockwood
Folly Inlet. The boat was not in a
life-threatening situation and did not
have a radio, Arndt said.
Due to another case already in
progress, the station asked Bruns
wick County 911 to have a Holden
Beach Water Rescue boat check on
the vessel. A short time later, the
crew of the stricken boat repaired
the problem. It was escorted back to
Holden Beach by a water rescue
boat.
Sunday afternoon at about 4:30, a
woman called the station to report
that her husband had not returned
from a fishing trip. She said he and
another man had departed from the
Holden Beach area in a 16- foot
johnboat for a day's fishing on the
Intracoastal Waterway.
The station launched its 2 1 -foot
inflatable fast-response boat to in
vestigate. About an hour later,
Brunswick County 911 called to re
port that the johnboat had returned
safely with all personnel accounted
for.
