West Sweatshirts
Back By Demand
The gray sweatshirts that be
came the symbol of West Bruns
wick school spirit during last
year's high school football play
offs are back by popular demand.
The attractive, long-sleeve
sweatshirts with green and gold
satin letters on the front will be
on sale during the Trojans' home
coming game, Oct. 15 against
East Columbus.
Sweatshirts cost $25 each, said
assistant athletic director Martie
Gillis. Proceeds will benefit West
Brunswick athletics.
Vikings Spoil South Homecoming
West Columbus overcame an ear
ly case of "fumblitis" and a 10-0
deficit to upset South Brunswick 26
23 last Friday in a Waccamaw
2A/3A Conference high school foot
ball game.
The Vikings lost four first-half
fumbles before getting their offense
in gear and scoring 20 unanswered
points against the Cougars, who ce'
ebrated homecoming Friday.
South Brunswick turned the early
fumbles into 10 points. Jamie Brun
ner kicked a 32-yard field goal, and
Terry Galloway added a 3-yard
touchdown run to give the Cougars a
10-0 lead early in the second quarter.
West Columbus responded with a
nine-play, 55-yard scoring drive.
Senior quarterback Magellan Powell
ran 10 yards for the touchdown and
also ran for a two-point conversion
to cut the lead to 10-8.
Powell struck again, this time on
defense, with 3:24 left in the first
half when he intercepted a Jeff
Simon pass and returned it 88 yards
for his second TD of the night.
Amanda Burnside was crowned
homecoming queen at halftime, but
the coronation didn't seem to inspire
the Cougars, who gave up a long
touchdown run early in the third
quarter.
Marvin Edge, who shredded the
South Brunswick defense for 171
rushing yards. Kilted 60 yards for
the TD to give the Vikings a 20-10
lead with 8:43 left in the third peri
od.
South Brunswick trimmed the
lead to 20-17 late in the third quarter
on a 28-yard touchdown run by
Galloway and a Brunner kick.
But West Columbus came right
back with another score. Howard
McCollum rumbled 52 yards on the
first play of the fourth quarter to
build the Vikings' lead to 26-17.
With 9:53 left in the game, the
Cougars trimmed the deficit to three
points on a 34-yard touchdown pass
from Simon to receiver Lewis
Vaught.
However, South Brunswick never
threatened again. West Columbus
ran the last 5 minutes, 45 seconds,
off the clock with a 12 play, 58-yard
drive. The Vikings were at South 's
2-yard line when time expired.
South Brunswick (0- 1 conference,
3-2 overall) will play at East
Columbus this Friday. The Vikings
(2-0, 5-1) are idle this week.
