Local Deaths And Funerals CALVIN M. GRIFFIS Calvin M. "Griff" Griffis, 75, of Sunset Beach died Oct. 6. Born in Edgefield. S.C., he was a son of the late Charles E. and Lelia McGee Griffis. He was the retired owner of Griffis Tree Service and was an Army veteran of World War II. He was a member of Ocean View Baptist Church, where he seized as an usher. He was a former member of the Marlboro Rescue Squad and was a member of the American Legion. He was twice married, first to the late Mildred Lorton Griffis. Surviving are his widow, Connie Pender Quick Griffis of Sunset Beach; a son, Doug Charlton of Columbia; daughters Linda G. Brown of Charlotte and Brenda G. Burr of Petersburg, Va.; a sister, Virginia Simmons of Hunterville; stepsons William E. Quick of Che raw, S.C., and John R. Quick of Benncttsville, S.C.; six grandchil dren and one great-grandchild. Services were to be held Oct. 8 at Thomas Memorial Baptist Church in Bennettsville, with burial in Sunset Memorial Park, Bennettsville. ELIZABETH KATHLEEN EVANS Elizabeth Kathleen Evans, 62, of Bolivia, died Oct. 9 at her residence. The funeral was Oct. 11 in the Shallotte Church of Christ, with Brother Leon F. Pearsall and Brother Jerry Bell officiating. Burial was in Forest Lawn Cemetery, Bolivia. Mrs. Evans was born in Colum bus County on Dec. 6, 1930, the daughter of Darcus Clewis Cumbee of Shallotte and the late Barden Cumbee. She was a member of the Bruns wick County Church of Christ. Survivors in addition to her moth er include her husband, Ernest P. Evans Sr. of the home; four sons, Ernie P. Evans Jr.. Donnie Evans and Terry Evans, all of Bolivia, and Timothy Cumbee of Shallotte; three daughters, Connie Shepherd of Boli via, Cathy Schneider of Supply and Robin Blake of Rocky Point; a sis ter, Laura Johnson of Richmond, Va.; and 13 grandchildren. EVELYN L. DAVIS Evelyn L. Davis, 64, of Southport died Oct. 4 at Dosher Memorial Hospital. The funetal was Oct. 7 at Mt. Carmel AME Church, with the Rev. Richard Davis, pastor, officiating. Burial was in Northwood Cemetery. Survivors include her husband, Anthony Davis of the home; two daughters, Wanda Davis and Jessica Johnson, both of Southport; four sons, F. Anthony Davis, Julian K. Davis and Guy Davis, all of Greens boro, and Timothy Davis of Southport. HERBERT RUFUS GORE Herbert Rufus Gore, 88, of Na kina, died Oct. 7 in Columbus County Hospital, Whiteville. The funeral was Oct. 9 in Beth esda United Methodist Church of Nakina, with the Rev. Rayford Me thvin officiating. Burial was in Beth esda Methodist Cemetery. A native of Columbus County, he was a son of the late Daniel Thomas and Olif Minnie Housand Gore. RALPH B. CLEMMONS Ralph Burton Clemmons, 80, of Supply died Oct. 7 in The Bruns wick Hospital. Tlie funeral was Oct. 9 in Sharon United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Rodney Lane Jr. and the Rev. Tracie Varnum officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Born Nov. 6, 1912, in Supply, he was a son of the late Samuel and Caroline Sellers Clemmons. He was a retired commercial fisherman. Survivors include two daughters, Helen Kirby and Nellie Dixon, both of Supply; five grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. HENRY C. SCHENKER Henry Charles Schenker of Salt aire Village died Oct. 7. The funeral and burial were in Foxboro, Mass. Bom April 2, 1926, in Jersey City, N.J., he was a son of the late Henry Charles and Margaret Dorf ner Schenker. He was a member of Little River United Methodist Church. Survivors include his son, Rich ard Schenker of Roslindale, Mass.; three daughters, Joan Schekner of Middletown, Conn., Deborah Cof feey of West Columbia, S.C., and Donna Hubbard of Vista, Calif.; a sister, Betty Young of Bricktown, N.J.; seven grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. MARK C. PERRYMAN Mark C. Perryman, 44, of Long Beach, died Oct. 8 at his home. A memorial service was held Oct. 10 in the chapel of Southport Baptist Church. Burial was planned at a lat er date in Oaklawn Memorial Gar dens, Winston-Salem. J.C. PRIVETTE J.C. "Ponas" Privette of Autumn Care of Shallotte, and formerly of Supply, died Oct. 9. The funeral was Oct. 12 in the chapel of Coble Ward-Smith Funeral Service, Supply, with the Rev. Ro bert Hall officiating. Burial was in Stanley Cemetery, Supply. Mr. Privette was born in Wake County on March 7, 1900. Survivors include his wife, Ava Privette of Shallotte; two brothers, Frank Privette of Shallotte and Will iam Privette of Supply. PEARL MILLER HOLTZ Pearl (Penny) Miller Holtz of Leland died Oct. 4. The funeral was Oct. 8 in And rews Mortuary, Market Street Cha pel, with the Rev. Jerty Greene offi ciating. Burial was in Oleander Memorial Gardens. She was bom March 8, 1937, in Parkersburg, W.Va., and had moved to North Carolina 12 years ago. She and her husband, Charles, owned and operated Cloverleaf Mobile Home Park in Leland. She was the daughter of the late John and Delcia Miller. Survivors in addition to her hus band include five daughters, Linda Louise Hiehle of Jacksonville, Sher ry Reed Johnston of Belpre. Ohio, Terry June Suggs of Leland, Tina Lynn Holtz of Westfield, N.Y., and Joy Charlene Holtz of the home; two sisters, Nancy Hewlette and Esther Hall, both of Parkersburg, W.Va., and a brother, Eugene Miller, also of Parkersburg; five grandchil dren; and one great-granddaughter. DOROTHY DOLORES ROBERTSON RIFE Dorothy Dolores Robertson Rife of Leland died Oct. 5 in New Han over Regional Medical Center, Wil mington. The funeral was Oct. 8 in Leland Baptist Church, with the Rev. Billy Buchanan officiating. Burial was in Greenlawn Memorial Park. She was born in Roanoke, Va., on Sept. 23, 1929, the daughter of the late Thomas BurTell and Beulah Arvella Turner Robertson. She was a member of Leland Baptist Church and was retired from France Neck wear after 1 8 years. Survivors include her husband, David Perry Rife Jr. of the home; a son, Thomas Alan Rife of Leland; two daughters, Brenda Crocker and Linda Thompson, both of Leland; two sisters, Audrey Self and Mary Moores, both of Salem, Va.; eight grandchildren; and three great grandchildren. GUY KENNETH BERNARD The funeral for Guy Kenneth Ber nard of St. Louis, Mo., and formerly of Supply, was to be held today (Thursday) at 2 p.m. in Cedar Grove Missionary Baptist Church. The Rev. Freeman Gause, pastor, was to officiate, with the Rev. Carl Reaves delivering the eulogy. Burial was to be in Riley-Hewett Cemetery. Survivors include his mother, Queenie Bernard of Supply; two sons, Kenneth Bernard and Phillip Bernard, both of St. Louis; a daugh ter, Nicole Bernard of St. Louis; three sisters, Mrs. Clydell Durham, Mrs. Carleen Reaves and Mrs. Sheral Johnson, all of Supply; and two brothers, Curtis Bernard and Samuel Bernard Jr., both of Supply. Episcopal Chamber Choir To Present Evensong Here Schola Cantorum, the chamber choir of the Episcopal Diocese of East Carolina, will present Choral Evensong at St. James the Fisher man Episcopal Church in Shallotte Sunday, Oct. 24, at 5 p.m. The program, reflecting the An glican tradition, will include the mu sic of Tye, Bairstow, Tallis and Burke. Schola Cantorum has sung con certs and choral evensongs in churches in North Carolina and Vir ginia, and has performed in North Carolina Composers Alliance con certs in Wilmington and Raleigh and has participated since 1991 in the annual St. Francis' Day Festival at the Cathedral of St. John the Divine, New York City. Schola Cantorum is conducted by Samuel Burke, music director for WHQR Public Radio, Wilmington, and organist and director at the Church of the Servant Episcopal Church, Wilmington. The two sessions will be held at different churches, combining praise, worship and fellowship with annual activity reports and election of officers for the coming year. On Oct. 21, the meeting will open at 3 p.m. at Faith Baptist Church at Bolivia and resume Oct. 22 at Oak Island Baptist Church, Oak Island. Speakers will include the Rev. Wade Laughter, pastor of Sabbath Home Baptist Church. Supply, and the Rev. Arthur Yount, pastor of Antioch Baptist Church, Bolivia. The annual meeting is open to all county Baptists, though only mes sengers are allowed to vote during the business sessions. Revival, Homecoming Set Village Point United Methodist Church will celebrate homecoming Oct. 17. Guest speaker will be the Rev. Trade Varnum. There will be special singing, and lunch will be enjoyed in the fellow ship hall. Everyone is united. The church also will hold revival services beginning Oct. 17. Visitors Welcome The more visitors the better on Visitor Sunday at Soldier Bay Baptist Church in Ash. Anyone who does not now have a church home is invited to join church members for this special day, said spokesman Patricia Brown. Revival Slated The Rev. Thomas Register will be the evangelist for revival services Oct. 13 through 15 at St. James Mis sionary Baptist Church in Bolivia. The Rev. Vaughn R. Cherry is pastor.
