His three-month-old brother Joseph Phillips Jr. prefers napping. Riding the merry-go-round is a new adventure for 16-month-old Sam Davis (in photo at left) of Emory, Va. His mom, Sandy Davis, keeps him secure in the saddle. These kids took advan tage of beautiful weather as the festival opened Friday, while there was still plenty of food and space on the rides. Brunswick County Residents Submit 1,921 Soil Samples Brunswick County property own ers submitted 1,921 soil samples to the N.C Department of Agriculture (NCDA) for testing before planting their 1993 crops. The department's Agronomic Division analyzed the fertility status of each sample and made specific recommendations for lime and fertil izer applications. "These samples represent situa tions from corn, cotton and veg etable fields to golf fairways and flower beds," said Bob Edwards of Lumberton, regional agronomist. Soil acidity continues to be the primary fertility problem in Bruns wick County, he said. Brunswick County farmers and gardeners also submitted another 44 soil samples for nematode assay. Nematodes are microscopic para sites that attack plant roots. High populations of nematodes are man aged by planting resistant crop vari eties, rotating crops and applying nematicides. "Testing soils and applying ne maticides where needed is good en vironmental stewardship as well as being economically and agronomi cally sound," said Edwards. The soil testing and nematode as say laboratories are housed in the Agronomic Division of NCDA in Raleigh. Sample containers are available from most local fertilizer dealerships and agriculture-related agencies, including the local Bruns wick County Cooperative Extension Service. Edwards suggests that samples he submitted early to avoid the process ing delays that have been experi enced in past years as demand for these services steadily increase. For Brunswick County growers, fall is the best type to submit soil samples for analysis, a service which is provided at no charge. We've Moved... The staff of Dr. Mark A.
