Optimists Install Officers, Induct New Members At Annual Banquet The South Brunswick Islands Optimist Club held its annual banquet Oct. 5 at Boys and Girls Home of Lake Waccamaw, celebrating its first year as a chartered club. Several guests from the sponsoring Whiteville Optimist Club were present to congratulate the club for its achievements as a first-year charter. The local group met the criteria for an honor club designation. Bruce Phillips Jr. of the Whiteville club was toastmaster. Highlighting the vening was induction of new offi cers for the 1 993-94 fiscal year, leaving office were Joe Gore, president; Sara Estep and Kerry Craig, vice presi dents; and Tammy Gore, secretary. Bonnie Cox will take over as president, with Les Craft and Currie Batchelor becoming vice presidents. Tammy Gore will remain as secretary, and Sara Estep will become club treasurer. Regional Lt. Bob Little in stalled the officers. Joe Gore presented perfect attendance awards to Bonnie Cox. Carolyn Craft. Les Craft, Dave Deaver. Missy Elkins, Sara Estep, Joe Gore, Tammy Gore, Beryl Hall and Lisa Winfree. Special appreciation awards were given by Gore to Les Craft of the SBI club and Eric Underwood of the Whiteville club for their guidance throughout the year. The lifetime member award was presented to Bonnie Cox. The award is voted on by club members to recog nize the member they feel most deserves recognition for guidance throughout the year. Cox inducted six new members, including Steve Gore, Kitty Shore. Jeff Finney, Amanda Finney. Libby Schilz and Pat McQuown. Mount Olive Fundraiser Set Oct. 25 The annual Brunswick-Onslow counties gift support dinner for Mount Olive College is scheduled for Monday, Oct. 25, at 7 p.m. The dinner, one of 17 held each year in eastern North Carolina, will he held at Dixon High School in Dixon. The 1993 goal is $4,375. The program will feature enter tainment by the Mount Olive Col lege Singers and a report on the col lege's service to its students and church, community and region. Dur ing the 1992-93 academic year, the college served approximately l.(KX) students and graduated the largest class in its history with the awarding of 163 degrees. All interested persons, members of Free Will Baptist churches, alum ni and friends of the college are in vited to attend. Mount Olive College is a four year liberal arts institution spon sored by the Convention of Original Free Will Baptists. Located in Wayne County, it serves students on its main campus, at Seymour Johns on Air Force Base in Goldsboro and at its New Bern Center on Gien burnie Road. Chapter Marks ADK Anniversary The local chapter of Alpha Delta Kappa is celebrating the 46th an niversary this month of the interna tional honorary sorority for women educators. Beta Beta Chapter has 39 mem bers and is one of 102 active chap ters. The local chapter not only awards scholarships, but also pro motes other altruistic projects. To become a member, an educator must be nominated by other teachers and invited to join by the organiza tion. The group meets monthly. The sorority promotes high stan dards in education and recognizes outstanding women educators who are actively engaged in teaching, in administration or in some special ized field of the teaching profession.
