FRIDAY NIGHT PREVIEW
Trojans Prepare For N Title Game ' At West Columbus
BY DOUG RUTTER
West Brunswick High School
football fans who thought the
Trojans played their biggest confer
ence game of the season two weeks
ago at Whiteville better think again.
The Trojans, who escaped the
Wolfpacks den with a 28-25 win,
return to the heart of Columbus
County Friday night for another big
game against the West Columbus
Vikings.
First place in the Waccamaw
Conference will be up for grabs
when the Trojans and Vikes clash at
Cerro Ciordo. West Briyiswick en
ters the game 4-0 in the league,
while West Columbus checks in at
3-0.
"The way we look at it. this game
is for the conference championship,"
West Brunswick Head Coach Jim
Brett said Monday.
"If we want to accomplish our
goal of winning the conference
championship we need to win this
game." he said. "It would also wrap
up the first playoff spot for us. so it's
a very big game."
West Brunswick is riding a six
game winning streak, while the
Vikings have won five straight.
Another West Brunswick win Friday
would give the Trojans their first
league football title since 1988.
The Trojans (6-2 overall) are
"The way we look at ity this game is
for the conference championship. "
? Trojan Coach Jim Brett
coming off a 41-12 thrashing of East
Columbus, while the Vikings (6-1)
struggled against county rival South
Columbus last Friday before emerg
ing with a 14-7 win.
West Brunswick has already
clinched one of the Waccamaw
Conference's two state 3A playoff
berths, while West Columbus is bat
tling Whiteville for the league's only
2A playoff slot.
In addition last week's win at
South Columbus, the Vikings have
posted wins this year over East
Columbus (34-8), East Montgomery
(36-6), Fairmont (47-0) and Wilm
ington Laney (49-0).
The 7-0 Clinton Dark Morses,
ranked third in the state in last
week's 2A high school football poll,
handed West Columbus its only loss
of the season, 21-12, back on Sept.
3.
Fans are likely to see a lot of
points scored Friday night. The
Trojans average 33.1 points per
game while West Columbus scores
an average of 31.1 points per outing.
West Brunswick will have to he
wary of West Columbus' Magellan
Powell, a three-year starter at quar
terback and defensive back. Other
standouts for the Vikes include run
ning backs Marvin Edge and
Howard McCollum.
The Vikings are similar to the
Trojans in that one of their greatest
strengths is team speed. West
Columbus' football team includes
several boys who have helped the
school win back-to-back state track
championships.
West Brunswick didn't use many
players both ways last week against
East Columbus, but Brett plans to
start seven players on both sides of
the football at West Columbus.
"We'll need to play a lot of peo
ple both ways because they are a re
al good football team," he said. "It's
got to be full speed with the best
we've got. We should be ready to
handle that."
Expected to play both ways are
Eric Johnson (QB/DB), Michael
Lance (FB/LB), Steve Holmes
