Pumpkin Heads
Strange faces are a common sight around the Brunswick County Clerk of Courts office. Especially this
week, as staff members got into the Halloween spirit by decorating their office with jack-o'-lanterns
carved by June Rich, visiting field representative from the N.C. Administrative office of the courts.
Shown with some of her handiwork are (from left) Cherry Clark, Rich, Lisa Aycock, Yvette Murray

Fishing Boat Pulled From
Surf Off Yaupon Beach
A 21 -foot fishing boat was pulled
from the surf off Yaupon Beach last
week after U.S. Coast Guard res
cuers found it disabled and drifting
toward shore with a net fouled in its
propeller.
According to Oak Island Station
Chief J.D. Arndt. the Coast Guard
received a call at about 8:30 p.m.,
Oct. 18, from a citizen who reported
a vessel aground near the beach line
about a quarter-mile west of Yaupon
Beach Pier.
The station launched its 21 -foot
rigid-hulled inflatable fast-response
boat and issued a Marine Assistance
Radio Broadcast (MARB) to give
commercial salvors an opportunity
to handle the case. No response was
received, Arndt said.
Arriving on scene, the 21 -footer
found the vessel close to the shore
line.
"It was being picked up by the in
coming surf and occasionally touch
ing bottom," Arndt said. "In addi
tion, the vessel had a net fouled in
its screw."
The Coast Guard boat provided
immediate assistance by pulling the
fishing boat out to deeper water,
where the crew was able to remove
the net and get underway.
Friday morning at about 8:30, the
station received a call from the skip
per of the sailing vessel "Cold
Gold, " reporting himself "disorient
ed" in the vicinity of Frying Pan
Shoals. He said he had already run
aground twice and requested assis
tance getting into the Cape Fear
River. Arndt said.
Because the situation was deemed
not to be an emergency, the station
advised the captain to set an anchor
and issued a MARB to request help
from a commercial salvor. Mean
while, the station's 41 -foot patrol

The Coast Guard boat arrived and
remained on scene until an arrange
ment was made between the sail
boat's captain and a commercial sal
vor, who escorted the "Cold Gold"
to Buoy #4 in the Cape Fear River.
Saturday at about 9:45 a.m., the
station was called by a passing ves
sel reporting a capsized boat and
three persons in the water near
Caswell Beach Pier. The 21 -footer
was launched and arrived at the
scene to find that the all three had
been picked up by a passing boater.
The Coast Guard boat righted the
overturned vessel and towed it out
of the shipping lanes, where it was
deemed to be a hazard to navigation.
