Seeking Shallotte Library Access During Renovation
OI E.K1V C ARLSON
If patrons of the West Brunswick
Library branch in Shallotte want to
use its collection while the building
is closed for four months of renova
tion next spring, they should find a
place to house the books and enlist
volunteers to help run it.
Fhat was the message given to the
Friends of the Library support group
at the Brunswick County Library
Board meeting Monday night after
FOL officers asked the trustees for
help in keeping the Shallotte library
open.
Construction of new library build
ings in Leland and on Oak Island are
slated for completion by next
March, according to Don Eggert,
chairman of the library board and its
building committee.
The board hopes to advertise for
bids next month for the renovation
and expansion of the Southport and
Oak Island branches, with construc
tion scheduled to begin March 3.
Current plans call for the old
branches to be closed during renova
tion, with library employees re-as
signed temporarily to the new
branches. The Shallotte and
Southport libraries are expected to
be closed until mid-July, Eggert
said.
Last spring, users of the West
Brunswick library branch wrote nu
merous letters to board members
asking that the Shallotte library be
kept open during construction. That
idea was rejected after concerns
were raised about potential safety
and liability problems.
Officers of the Friends of the
West Brunswick Library Monday
asked the library board for help in
finding some way to keep at least
some of the library's collection
available to users.
"We don't have the money to pay
for any kind of move," said FOL
Secretary Blanche Bechtle. "Nor do
we have enough to pay for rent or
insurance or staff. We need your
help."
Board Member Gene Pinkerton
said that trying to keep the libraries
functioning during refurbishment
would require "a tremendous ex
pense," because the library depart
ment does not plan to hire additional
workers until the next budget year,
when all four libraries will be open.
Me suggested that the closings
might give Shallotte library users an
incentive to visit the county's other
branches.
Bechtle complained that while
Southport library users need only
drive across the bridge to the Oak
Island branch, those living in the
Calabash and Ash areas would have
to travel more than an hour to check
out books in Leland or Yaupon
Bcach.
"What about the children?" asked
Phyllis Manning. "It's utterly ridicu
lous to expect children (in western
Brunswick County) to go all the
way to Southport."
Board Member Anne Mines,
whose Oak Island Library Boosters
raised nearly $50,(KX) toward the
construction of a new branch there,
suggested that the Friends of West
Brunswick Library could organize a
similar effort to fund and staff a
temporary library.
"If that many people in Shallotte
want a library, they ought to come
out and support it like the people on
Oak Island did." Mines said. "You
ought to be able to find a local busi
nessman who will loan you a build
ing for four months."
Member Margaret Harper said the
library board does not have enough
money in its budget to complete,
staff and equip the four libraries.
And it will not receive any more
funds until the next budget year be
gins in July. So the county would
not be able fund a relocation effort.
The board informally agreed that
it would support the temporary li
brary relocation and could probably
provide one staff member to super
vise volunteers. But it will be up to
the Library Boosters to find a build
ing and staff it.
Booster members said they intend
to begin a campaign to keep the li
brary open and will advise the li
brary board of its progress.
In other business the board adopt
ed a policy to allow temporary resi
dents to check out library materials.
Seasonal residents may be eligible
for a temporary library card by pay
ing a non-refundable fee of S25 and
showing proof of permanent ad
dress.
The temporary card will be valid
for 12 months and can be used to
borrow unlimited paperbacks plus
three hard back books or one cas
sette at a time. The policy will not
allow persons who are visiting for
less than a month to check out li
brary materials, although they are
invited to use library resources.
LIBRARY BOARD Member Gene Pinkerton hears a request from Blanch Bechtle of the Friends of
West Brunswick Library , who asked for help in keeping the Shallotte library branch collection avail
able to the public during renovation of the building.
