Behind Pizza Hut & McDonald's On Premise ring sizing Major credit cards accepted Poplar Said Symbol Of Commitment BY SUSAN USHER Sixth-grader Mark Darby was the only Shallotte Middle School student wearing a suit Monday morning, hut he had a good reason. Along with "Little Davie," a 35-inch high poplar seedling nearly as tall as he. Darby was the center of at tention Monday at Brunswick County's observance of the bicentennial of the founding of the University of North Carolina at Chape! Hill. The brief ceremony celebrated the symbolism of the seedling, grown from a seed taken two years ago from the historic Davie Poplar on the UNC campus. Before a small audience on the front lawn, the Jj school band performed, an occasional piece of sheet rnu ? sic floating away in the stiff breeze, and the Army JROTC Color Guard from West Brunswick High School presented the colors. Darby, who may someday attend UNC. had accepted the seedling on behalf of Brunswick County during an Oct. 12 ceremony at the University of North Carolina, along with a certificate and a hug from Coach Dean Smith. Monday Darby said he was "very honored" to serve as Brunswick County's representative at the UNC-CH Bicentennial celebration and to hear President Hill Clinton. The visit by the academically gifted student al so included a tour of the campus. Principal Sandra Robinson said that, as a result of Mark's experiences, there is now "truly a link" between the university, Shallotte Middle School and the Bruns wick County Schools. "This tree will be a constant reminder to the school and community as we strive for excellence in education. As 'Little Davie' grows tall and strong so may our rela tionships strengthen." As part of the UNC Bicentennial observance, each of the state's MX) counties received a seedling, a symbol of UNC-CH's history of far-reaching public service and leadership, and North Carolina's commitment to pub licly-supported education. "Whether or not one attended the university, we have all benefited from it." said speaker Margaret Har per. echoing that theme. "It may have been through the Institute of Government, which otters training for local government officials, or perhaps through an Area Health Education Center." Harper is a former UNC trustee, 1991 William R. Davie Award recipient for service to UNC and current member of the Board of Visitors. Like the Davie Poplar itself, she said, quoting an early UNC class poem. UNC stands "a monarch grander than its fellows...," its influence far-reaching to all cor ners of the state. "Likewise may our Brunswick County Davie Poplar take root, prosper and grow." While the University of Georgia was the first to se cure its charter, the University of North Carolina was the first state university in America to open its classrooms for students, on Jan. 15, 1795. "Little Davie." pot and all. was placed temporarily in the ground Monday morning by coach and physical education teacher Ron Champion. The tree was to be planted later in the week. Superintendent of Schools Ralph Johnston presented Darby with a gold-painted shovel that will be kept at the school as a memento of the ceremony. He related the planting of the tree to the founding of the university 20() years ago. "Both represent the future for North Carolina chil dren," he said. "Tfieir education is of much importance. Both our future and theirs depends on it." JENNY'S PAWN I Hn 130. nib frm Hn l'lShalWo.
