Pcrserverance paid off Sunday for
a family of friendly competitors.
The Grice. Donaldson and
Dowdy households of Bennettsville,
S.C., claimed all three trophies in
the 1993 N.C. Festival By The Sea
sand sculpting contest.
Stormy weather postponed the
event from Saturday to Sunday, but
an afternoon chill, high winds and
even the thought of the two-and-a
half-hour drive home didn't weaken
their enthusiasm for the project.
It's tradition: The extended family
gathers two times a year ? Easter
and Halloween ? at Holden Beach.
Each Halloween weekend, you'll
find family members of several gen
erations digging, patting and push
ing sand on the beach across from
the Campground By The Sea on the
west end of the island.
"We've been competing the past
four or five years." said Sylvia
Grice. "It would have been a shame
if they couldn't have done it this
year. They really look forward to it."
Only one thing was lacking: An
audience to cheer the sculptors on.
"Their remarks are usually so en
couraging and appreciative," said
Mrs. Grice. "I missed them this
year."
Family members not only com
pete but usually win. bringing home
one or more trophies, including Best
of Show in 1992.
This year Travis Dowdy was
skeptical as he walked away from
his team's intricate spider web and
spooky-eyed black spider. "Are you
sure we got second place?" he
asked. "Are you sure they didn't
mix up the trophies?"
Judging is based on originality,
artistic merit, design and neatness.
This year's judges were T.J. White,
lola Ballinger and Jerry Owens,
Campground By The Sea campers.
