Wilson Bumps Trojans From Tennis Plavoffs Wilson Fike High School knocked West Brunswick from the state 3A dual-team girls' tennis playoffs with a 9-0 win last Wednesday in second round play in Shallotte. The Lady Trojans, co-champions of the Waccamaw Conference, fin ished the season with a 13-5 record. Wilson Fike, champions of the Big Eight Conference, improved to 15-0. That's the only thing that will he on the line Friday night when archri vals West Brunswick and South Brunswick renew their storied high school football rivalry at Jack Campbell Stadium in Boiling Spring Lakes. Both teams have already clinched berths in the state 3A playoffs, with West Brunswick nailing down the top spot and South Brunswick, the second in the Waccamaw Confer ence. The Trojans enter the contest 4-1 in the Waccamaw and 6-3 overall, while the Cougars come into the regular-season finale with a 2-3 con ference record and overall mark of 5-4. "The records don't mean a whole lot in this type of game," West Brunswick Coach Jim Brett said Friday night following his team's 34-8 beating of the visiting Lum berton Pirates. "This will be my third contest against them and it's usually a hard fought ball game," added Brett, now in his second year at West Bruns wick. "The team that wants it the most will get it." South Brunswick would love nothing more than a win over the fa vored Trojans, who have beaten the Cougars four straight times by a combined score of 104-13. For the first time ever, the Trojans and Cougars have advanced to the state football playoffs in the same season. As the top 3 A team in the Wacca maw Conference, West Brunswick will have home-field advantage throughout the playoffs. As the number two team. South Brunswick faces a tougher post-season road. For the first time in three years, the West-South game will not deter mine playoff berths. The clash of backyard rivals settled which of the two teams went to the playoffs in 1990, 1991 and 1992. South Brunswick won the 1990 battle 21-14 at Boiling Spring l^akes to clinch a post-season bid and knock West Brunswick from con tention. The Trojans returned the favor two years ago with a narrow, 13-6 win in Shallotte en route to the first of their back-to-back Eastern North Carolina 2A Championships. Brunswick Belles Janice Owens rolled a high game of 203 to lead the Brunswick Belles last Wednesday at Brunswick County Bowling Center. She posted a 454 scratch series and 634 handi cap series. Other high rollers were Clare Stoll with a 184 game. 488 scratch and 626 handicap; Ginny Anzelone, 181, 503, 611; Ann Poison. 171, 457, 640; and Eddy Wiley, 166. 460, 679. Marian Monaghan had a 174 game and 450 scratch series. Posting high handicap series scores were Ruth Linder with 634 and Jean Lac erenza with 623. Dot Wayland had a 1 77 high game. l^ast year. West Brunswick strug gled to a 22-0 win at South Bruns wick in the final week of the regular season. The Trojans went on to the playoffs and captured their first state football championship in school his tory. Although this week's game will not decide playoff berths. South Brunswick Coach Bill Hewett said Tuesday he still expects a good game for the county championship. "It's still that old South-West ri valry," he said. "Us losing last week took a little luster off it. but I don't think that's going to take anything away from it. It's just more of a pride situation than a playoff situa tion." Friday night's contest will be the 25th between West Brunswick and South Brunswick, a rivalry that dates back to 1973. The Trojans hold a 14-10 edge in the series. West Brunswick has dominated the Cougars recently, winning the last four games by an average score of 26-3. The schools met twice in 1991 and again in 1992. The Trojans and Cougars split the first 20 games in the series. West won five of the first six, but South won eight of 11 from 1977 to 1987. The Trojans have won six of the last seven, including four in a row. Against the rest of the Waccamaw Conference this season. West Bruns wick's only loss was at West Columbus (7-6). The Trojans have defeated Whiteville (28-25). South Columbus (45-0). East Columbus (41-12) and Pender (42-7). South Brunswick has suffered conference losses to West Columbus (26-23). Whiteville ( 14-7) and South Columbus (21-14). The Cougars were winners against East Columbus (29-28) and Pender (20 0). West Brunswick can wrap up at least a share of the Waccamaw Conference championship with a win at South Brunswick. Whiteville and West Columbus also are 4-1 in the league going into the final week. In other Waccamaw Conference games this week. Whiteville plays at East Columbus and West Columbus hosts Pender. South Columbus com pleted its season last week. The Whiteville Wolfpack can clinch the league's only 2A playoff berth wilh a win Friday night at East Columbus. If the Gators win. West Columbus would be playoff bound with a win over Pender.
