Charlotte Woman Breaks Festival 1 OK Record BY DOUG RUTTER A steady downpour and driving wind weren't enough to slow down Pamela Wilson of Char lotte, who set a new record in the women's 10K Saturday at the N.C. Festival By The Sea. Wilson completed the soggy, 6.2-mile loop at Holden Beach in 39 minutes even, shattering the old course record by 96 seconds. Laura Boyce had set the previous best of 40:36 in 1988. Wilson's fast pace highlighted the trio of festi val road races Saturday morning, which included a 5K run and One-Mile Fun Run. The races drew 67 participants, an excellent turnout considering the weather. Race coordinator Johnny Craig said 23 runners competed in the 5K race, 23 in the 10K race and 25 in the mile. There were runners from both Carolinas and Tennessee. Wilson, who won the women's 10K at last year's Festival By The Sea with a time of 40:50, was almost two minutes faster this year. Other top four finishers in the women's 10K were Jeanette Bryan of Myrtle Beach, S C., with a time of 48:48, Carol Price of Cary in 50:23 and Marsha Kouba of Fayetteville in 50:26. Bill Dunn of Charlotte won the men's 10K with a time of 35:52. Runners-up were Michael Cheek of North Wilkesboro in 39:18, Ralph Lockwood of Wilmington in 40:00 and Roy Musselwhite of Wilmington in 40:01. The men's 5K belonged to the younger genera tion, as teen-agers claimed the top three places. Leading the way was 14-year-old Shawn McKee of Carolina Beach with a time of 18:59. Runners-up included 19-year-old Keane Bellamy of Shallotte with a time of 20:19, 15 year-old Jason Price of Cary in 20:22 and Melvin Gibson of Hampstead in 20:57. Stacy Garner of Raleigh was the women's 5K winner with a time of 20:43. She was followed by Susie KJuttz of Winston-Salem in 22:03, Janette Musselwhite of Wilmington in 23:34 and Tiffany Wahl of Greenville. S.C., in 23:43. In the One-Mile Fun Run, top performances were turned in by Danny Copeland of Wilming ton with a time of 5:43 and Susie KJuttz of Wins ton-Salem with 6:40. Other top men's finishers were Robert Burn side of Horseshoe in 5:54, Phillip Inman of Ash in 6:01 and Bruce McAfee of Holden Beach in 6:13. Participation Down, But Competition Strong As Ever In Horseshoe Tourney BY LYNN CARLSON Instead of T-shirts and bare feet, they pitched in winter coats and wool hats at this year's Festival By The Sea horseshoe-pitching contest, a bout in which only the truly com mitted ventured to compete. Rained out Saturday, the tourney took place under cloudy skies and against plummeting temperatures and a raw north wind Sunday after noon at Holden Beach. The rescheduling of the tourney and the weather cut participation to eight men and six women, a disap pointment for organizers following last year's record-setting 106 men and 15 women. Despite the addition of bleachers this year at the horseshoe pits beside the town's water tower, only a hand ful of spectators were there to cele brate the second year of victory for Oscar Overcash Jr. of Concord. Overcash bested former champion Eddie Sweatt of Holden Beach to win the 1993 men's singles title. In women's singles, Jean Fletcher beat her doubles partner Terry Bow ser to take the title. Only four women entered in singles, including past winners Shirley Driver and Alneda Holden. Fletcher and Bowser, who won last year's women's doubles, re tained their title after defeating Kris ten Bilotta and Stacy Gaynor of New Jersey. Joe Bilotta of New Jersey and John Fougeron of Dallas, Texas, are TERRY BOWSER and partner Jean Fletcher, both local resi dents, defended their Women 's Doubles title. the new men's doubles champions, defeating defending champs Mark Walker and Curtis Foust. The horseshoe-pitching contest is sponsored annually by Sun and Surf Containers and The Brunswick Bea con and is coordinated by Ben and Lou Tonking of Holden Beach.
