FISHING REPORT Weekend Fishing " Weathered Out ' BY DOUG RUTTER Steady rainfall on Saturday, a cold blast on Sunday and stiff winds both days did not add up to an enjoyable weekend of fishing in the South Brunswick Islands. The nasty weather gave spots and other fall favorites a temporary re prieve, but area fishing experts ex pect conditions to pick up inshore and offshore this week as the weath er improves. "It was pretty good up until the weekend." Curtis Williamson of Ocean Isle Beach Fishing Pier said Monday. "It was good Thursday and Friday, but it's been slow since then." Williamson said foul weather over the weekend kept most of the fishermen indoors. "Yesterday it was so cold and the water was so rough that people weren't even trying." The spot fishing was better a few miles west at Sunset Beach Fishing Pier. Spokesman F.d Kayler said an glers continued to catch spots through the rain and cold. "It's kind of cold, but they're catching fish," Kayler reported Monday morning. "We got weath ered out a little bit over the week end, but we had a great week." Kayler said spot fishing was ex cellent last week. "We had people out here catching fish yesterday, but they got weathered out and left," he added. Gil Bass of Holden Beach Fishing Pier said anglers caught spots, floun der and spottailed drum last week. "They're not jumping on the pier, but they're still catching some fish," Bass said Monday. "They're still catching some spots, and I feel good about more coming." Bass said the "old-timers" say the spots are running near Morehead City and should be at Holden Beach soon. "I'm hoping by the weekend that big run will be here." he said. Williamson said he expects a good week at Ocean Isle Beach Pier. "It's supposed to warm up. and that will make a difference." he said. Sheffield's John Sheffield of Sheffield's store at Ocean Isle Beach said fishermen caught speckled trout, flounder and spots last week. Judy Kiser of Charlotte caught eight flounder on Saturday, includ ing one that weighed 3.5 pounds. "The flounder have started show ing up pretty good," Sheffield said. "They're catching a lot of speckled trout." Sheffield said spot fishing slowed down last week. "The spots have ta pered off here right now. There's some but not as many as there was." Sheffield said the only good day for offshore fishing last week was Friday. David Hooks Jr. of Ocean Isle Beach caught several nice king mackerel in the 20-pound range. "I believe the offshore fishing will be good this week if the weath er cooperates," Sheffield said. TVipp's Fishing Center Anglers caught spots, spottailed drum and speckled trout last week out of Shallotte Point, said Joyce Land of Tripp's Fishing Center. In the ocean, she said fishermen caught king mackerel, black bass and a few bluefish. "It's slow right now," Land re ported Monday. "I hope it picks back up. We haven't had our run of spot yet."
