Two Local Men Are Honored At W hiteville Banquet
Two Shallotte men were honored
for their community and civic ac
complishments during the fourth
Tri-County United Negro College
Fund banquet held Nov. 6 in White
ville
Freeman Cause and Maliston
"Moe" Stanley were among seven
residents of Brunswick. Bladen and
Columbus counties recognized.
Cause has served as director of
special projects for the Brunswick
County Board of Education since
1989 and is pastor of Cedar Grove
Missionary Baptist Church. Me was
principal of Union Primary School
from 1979 to 1986 and the Alter
native School from 1986 to 1989,
and taught science and math from
1959 to 1976.
Stanley has been an owner and
operator of Joe & Moe's Auto Ser
vices Inc. since 1978. He has served
in various administrative positions
in the Brunswick County Schools,
including vice principal of West
Brunswick High School. He has
been a member of the Brunswick
County Board of Health since 1990
and serves on the Brunswick County
Schools' Minority Recruitment Tax
Force.

cent hostile actions against Ameri
can and other military personnel
there.
Davis is the son of Chris H. Mey
ers of Shallotte. A 1988 graduate of
Hemingway (S C.) High School, he
joined the Marine Corps in October
1988.
Fenner's wife Kelly is the daugh
ter of Bobby Mercer of Shallotte. Ik
is a 1990 graduate of Bladuck
(Minn.) High School and joined the
Marine Corps in June 199<).
Named Marshal
Rachel L. Ragsdale of Boiling
Spring Lakes has been named a uni
versity marshal at UNC-Greensboro
for the 1993-94 academic year.
Less than three percent of UNCG
students achieve the honor each
year.
To be selected as university mar
shals, full-time undergraduate stu
dents must be enrolled in at least 12
semester hours of course work.
They also must have completed 30
semester hours and have cumulative
grade point averages of at least 3.65
of a possible 4.0.
The marshals serve as ushers for
UNCG's December convocation for
graduates and for the annual com
mencement program in May. They
also serve as student hosts for other
campus events.

Shell Show
At Museum
Nov. 12-14
The N.C. Shell Club will present
its annual competitive shell show at
the Cape Fear Museum Nov. 12-14.
The show includes more than 200
feet of exhibits featuring shells, shell
art and fossils.
The shell show competition will
include some of the oldest shells
found in the Lower Cape Fear. The
giant ruffled oyster, estimated to be
65 million years old, will mix with
modern shells like the North Carolina
state shell, the Scotch bonnet.
Giant specimens, such as Triton's
trumpet, and an assortment of exotic
international shells from African,
Europe, the South Pacific and the
Caribbean also will be shown.
Dealers will be available for col
lectors looking for rare shells.
Show hours are 9 a.m. until 5
p.m. Friday and Saturday, Nov. 12
and 13, and 2-5 p.m. Sunday. The
museum is at 814 Market St., Wil
mington.

Endowment. The scholarship was

Top Volunteer Gardener
Shirley Waggoner-Eisenman of Shallotte receives a certificate rec
ognizing her volunteer efforts as a member of the N.C. Cooperative
Extension Sendee's Master Gardener Program. The 37 men and
women who completed the training and volunteer program gath
ered for a banquet in Bolivia Monday night. Those who complete
the 36-hour course agree to contribute an equal amount of time
helping the extension service's education and advisory programs.
Waggoner-Eisenman donated more than 70 hours to the program,
said Horticultural Agent David Nash (shown at right). He said the
Brunswick County students were "the most enthusiastic group I've
ever worked with."
