Bird Club To Hear Frank Nesmith

Frank Nesmith of Sunset Beach.
"Mr. Bird Island," will speak on the
history and future of Bird Island at
the November meeting of the
Brunswick Bird Club.
Nesmith conducted tours of the
island beach this summer on behalf
of the Bird Island Preservation Soc
iety, a nonprofit organization work
ing to raise money and gain support
for public acquisition of the island
as a natural preserve. Privately
owned. Bird Island is located just
west of Sunset Beach on the North
Carolina-South Carolina border.
The Brunswick Bird Club meets
Wednesday, Nov. 17, at Atlantic
Telephone Membership Corp. on
N.C. 130 West, Shallotte. Anyone
interested in nature and the environ

Kiwanis Organizes
The new Kiwanis Club of South
port-Oak Island was officially orga
nized recently and meets weekly
Tuesdays at 7:15 a.m. at Sea Captain
Restaurant in Southport.
A charter night dinner is planned
in January.
Officers of the group are Gloria
Talley of Southport, president; Peter
Wyckoff of Southport, vice presi
dent; Brian Station of Southport,
treasurer; and Steve Heffner of Cas
well Beach, secretary.
The new club is sponsored by the
Wilmington Kiwanis Club. Member
meet weekly for fellowship, inspira
tional programs and summary re
ports of club activities. Kiwanis'
purpose is service to youth and the
elderly, community and nation.
Some clubs sponsore Key Clubs in
local iiig'u acnools or Circle K clubs
in colleges.
Membership is open to men and
women who work or live in the
Southport-Oak Island area. They
may apply ai any tegular breakfast
meeting or by calling Hcffner at

Elder Care Focus
Care of the elderly will be the fo
cus when the Calabash VFW Post
No. 7288 Ladies Auxiliary meets
Monday, Nov. 15, at 7 p.m., with a
guest speaker and film on the pro
gram.
Speaking will be Virginia Bel
lamy, a retired public health nurse
who serves on the Bruns.County
Nursing Home Advisory Board.
The film that will be shown was
created through the cooperative ef
forts of the Cape Fear Council of
Governments and WFCT TV in
Wilmington. It is the first of its kind
in North Carolina to lie used for
public education and training for
caretakers of the elderly.
Veterans Day At VFW
Holden Beach Veterans of For
eign Wars Post 8866 members and
ladies' auxiliary will hold Veterans
Day services at the VFW Post home
on Sabbath Home Road.
The program will begin at 1 1 a.m.
Nov. 11. "The public is invited to
help us honor all American veterans
who have served in every war before
and after World War 1, to defend
Democracy," said post spokesman
Fred Dilley.
Services will be held rain or
shine.
Wcves To Meet
The Azalea Anchors, the local
chapter of Waves National, will hold
its next meeting at Shoney's, Ole
ander Drive. Wilmington, at 1 1 a.m.
Nov. 13. Officers will he elected.
Membership is open to all former,
retired and active-duty Navy wo
men, Naval Reserve, Waves, Navy
Nurse Corps, Coast Guard and
women Marines.

Local Birth Announced
Kenneth and Robin Canady of
Longwood have announced the birth
of a baby girl, Kelsey Layne Can
ady.
She was born at 5:32 p.m. Oct. 29
at The Brunswick Hospital and is
their first child. She weighed 7
pounds, 10 ounces and was 21 inch
es long.
Grandparents are Mallory and
Bonnie Leonard of Shallotte and
Ruth and Dailey Canady of long
wood.
Poppies Aid Vets

group's recent poppy drive. The money collected helps support
