The weapon turns out to he clean.
It was legally purchased at a Shal
lotte pawn shop. The clip is loaded
with 31 rounds of ammunition pow
erful enough to rip through their
stoutest protective vest. The officers
have no choice but to return it to the
owner, who saunters off into the
darkness.
"Bad hays. Rail hoys.

When tlicy come for you?"
And so the night wears on as the
convoy visits other known drug
hangouts and the homes of indicted
suspects. Before long the van is
filled. On Monday morning it leaves
again, this time bound for another
notorious crack-dealing hangout in
the Phoenix area.
"This is just the beginning. It's
going to be an ongoing thing," said
narcotics officer Mike Speck in de
scribing the new stepped-up en
forcement effort. "We've targeted
areas where we've received specific
complaints about drug activity.
"We will continue to target those
areas and others." Speck said. "But
we will need public support. So if
you have a problem with drugs in
your neighborhood, call us and we'll
look into it."
The sheriff's department also rai
ded a known drug area in Southport
last week with assistance from the
Southport Police Department. Lic
ense checks set up at several of the
known trouble spots yielded numer
ous arrests and traffic citations.
Speck said.
Among those arrested during first
round Operation War Paint were:

? Gary Lee Walrath, 38. of
Supply on one charge each of pos
session with intent to sell and deliv
er marijuana, selling and delivering
marijuana, possession of less than a
half-ounce of marijuana and posses
sion of drug paraphernalia.

den Beach on one count of posses
sion with intent to sell and deliver
marijuana and one charge of selling
and delivering marijuana.
