To Get Lice When i Weather Turns Brunswick County Schools nurse Beatrice Flythe. R.N., says head lice infestation is an ongoing problem among school-age children. Lice can infest the hair anytime of year, she said. However, most cases are found when the weather starts to turn cold. A single child with head lice can easily spread the infestation among playmates in any setting, said Flythe. More eases of head lice infesta tion occur than all other communi cable childhood diseases combined, she said, which means it is quite likely someone's child will be ex posed at some time. Head-to-head contact is the main way lice spread to other children, but not the only way. "Sharing combs, hairbrushes, hooded coats, sweaters, hats, head bands and other pieces of clothing can also spread lice." she said, as can car seats and headrests and air line seats, pillows and stereo head phones. Itching is often the first clue that a child has lice ? especially itching be hind the ears, at the back of the neck and sometimes along the upper back. "Any child who complains of such itching should be immediately checked for head lice," said Flythe. "If you suspect that your child has lice due to frantic scratching of the scalp or your finding small flat bugs in the hair, treat with a pediculicide shampoo. "Do not send your child to school if the child has these symptoms," she added. In addition to treating the single infestation, Flythe said it is impor tant that every household member be examined as well and that every one who is infested be treated at the same time. Lice shampoo (pediculicide) is available over the counter without a prescription. It can also be obtained at no cost from the Brunswick County Health Department (253 4381 or 457-5281). A pediculicide product should never be used to prevent lice infesta tions, only to treat a problem that has been identified. Some products require a second treatment about seven to 10 days af ter the first treatment. To remove nits, the eggs of the lice that cling tightly to the hair near its roots, requires a fine- tooth comb. First, suggested Flythe. dip the comb in warm vinegar and then comb the hair repeatedly. The vine gar should help loosen the eggs. However any nits that cannot be removed by combing can be cut out with scissors or picked out with the fingernails. "Clean your nails immediately if you use them to remove nits," Flythe cautioned. Dead eggs can also be pushed along the hair shaft for removal. Good housekeeping can make a difference in whether a child is rein fested. When dealing with a lice infesta tion. it's important to simultaneously treat the environment ? either home or school, because lice and their nits can survive, for a short time, off of a human host. This means one should: ?vacuum all carpets, rugs, uphol stered furniture and mattresses thor oughly; ?wash all recently worn clothing and recently used towels, sheets and linens in hot soapy water and dry in a hot dryer for at least 20 minutes; ?tumble non-washable bedding and pillows in a hot dryer for 20 minutes; ?vacuum or wash furry or fuzzy toys or stuffed animals, especially if taken to bed by a child; ?soak all combs and hairbrushes in hot (130 degrees Fahrenheit) wa ter or rubbing alcohol for 10 min utes; and ?vacuum car seats and headrests, especially if someone in the house hold is in a car pool. Arris Golden, Tar Heels To March In Macy's Parade A former West Brunswick High School band member will be part of the 67th Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade in New York City Thursday. Arris Golden of Supply will be performing with the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill marching band. The 3(H)-student UNC-CH unit is the sole collegiate group performing in the parade, which features floats, giant ballooons and 100 clowns. The parade will march from Central Park West and 77th Street along Broad way to 34th Street, passing a street side crowd of an estimated 2 million people. "The band happened to be just in credible," said John McCar.n. who coordinates a team of Macy's em ployees that works year-round on the parade. "We saw these really ex citing patterns and maneuvers, a real sophistication." He said judges also noticed "a crisp marching and ma neuvering style" in the audition videotape. Nine high school and three nov elty bands will also participate in the parade, which will air on NBC-TV from 9 a.m. until noon. UNC-CH bandsmen are holding fundraising events and soliciting do nations to help pay the S60,(KH) cost of the trip to New York City. The Potter *s Wheel The Turtles UTest ?Clothing fi ?Uc.?
