N.J. Melba Ed ward Johnson of Shallotte teaches junior and se nior Advanced Placement (AP) and composition Brunswick. Students in AP classes can earn college credit for work completed in high school if they pass a rigorous year-end examination. AP exams require students to demonstrate mastery of college-lev el coursework by answering free-re sponse questions thai include written essays. Next June 11-16 Johnson will be JOHNSON English literature classes at West among the readers who evaluate an swers to AP English exam essay questions. She and other readers, se lected high school and college facul ty from across the country, will meet at Trinity University in Texas to evaluate and score answers from AP English exams taken in May. Participants will also have the op portunity to exchange ideas and sug gestions about their discipline, their courses and the AP Examination in their subject area. The annual AP reading, according to AP Program Director Walter B. McDonald, is the only national, large-scale setting that stimulates a continuing dialogue about achievement and assessment between school and college educa tors. Johnson, who applied for the pro gram three years ago, said serving as a reader "is the chance of a life time," benefiting her AP students and her professional growth. "By being trained as a reader I will find out more about how the ex School Counselors Take Part In State Conference Five Brunswick County school counselors attended the N.C. School Counselor Association annual con ference Nov. 15-17 in Greensboro. Christy Judah. counselor at Shallotte Middle School and vice president of the state organization, presented special sessions on the "Role of the School Counselor." Betty Buck, a Brunswick County guardian ad litem volunteer and for mer counselor in the local schools, presented a special program on abused children at a middle school interest level session attended by ap proximately 250 counselors. Also attending from Brunswick County were Sue Chapman. Union Elementary School. Bertha Bell and Wendy Milligan. West Brunswick High School; and Peggy Pridgen. Leland Middle School. The conference offered skill building workshops in areas such as family dynamics, suicide preven tion, multicultural awareness, legal and ethical issues and related psy chological topics. . She is co-chairman of the English Department, a member (if the Performance B^sed Accounta bility Plan evaluation committee, a member of the North Carolina Teachers of English Association and the National Education Association. She is a CAPE Distinguished Teacher/Scholar this year. Graduates of her AP English class have a 66 percent to 70 percent passing rate on the AP English Exam. Two years ago, 32 students countywide took some time of AP examination. Of those, five passed, all of whom were her senior AP English students. Last year she also had five students pass the exam. In Brunswick County, the school system pays the testing fee for stu dents who pass the exam and earn the college credit. Decision Expected On Beach Inspector liolden Beach should have a new building inspector by the end of the week, according to Town Manager Gus Ulrich. "I'm getting very close." Ulrich said Monday. "We should have a de cision by the middle of this week." Building Inspector Jim McSwain announced last month that he planned to resign so he could go into the construction business. McSwain has continued to work while the town searches for a replacement. "It looks like Jim should be able to continue until the first of next month," Ulrich said.
