SPORTING SCFNF College Football Bogus Without Playoff System College football is one of the most exciting sports to watch, but if there's one thing that keeps me from | ^ I Doug Rutter Sports Editor becoming a serious fan it's the way the champion is crowned. Each year, more than 100 Division I -A college football teams across the nation take the field with one thing in mind, winning the nation al championship. It's the ultimate goal. My problem with college football is the method by which the national , M n-?-r_ui championship is decided. It's not decided on the football field. It's decided in the press box. It's decided by a panel of sportswriters who vote each week on the teams that they think are the best in the nation. The problem is, these writers only see a handful of teams during the course of a season. It's ridiculous to think that a sportswriter can vote intelligently about a team he or she has never seen play. It's absurd to rank a team like Florida State, which has one loss, ahead of a team like West Virginia, which is undefeated. Unless these two teams play head-to-head, there's no way to know which one is superior. That's why polls are useless. Until big-time college football rids itself of the politics and establishes a playoff system, it will always be a Mickey Mouse sport in my mind. Just think if college basketball used a poll to crown its champion, N.C. State never would have beaten Houston. Villanova never would have beaten Georgetown. And North Carolina never would have beaten Michigan. By the way, the 1993 Tar Heels sit atop everybody's pre-season basket ball poll. Like I said, polls are useless. But given my recent history with UNC fans, I'll reserve my judgment until March. Winning Off The Field It's been another incredible football season for the West Brunswick Trojans. So incredible, in fact, that it's easy to lose sight of what's really im portant about high school. It's easy to forget that these kids ? some of whom are twice the size of adults ? have math homework and biology tests and English papers and the other responsibilities of high school students. Under those helmets and big pads, it's easy to forget they're just kids who like to hang out at Burger King and watch MTV. It's easy to forget that most of these kids will never play organized foot ball after they leave West Brunswick. Most of them will never block, score a touchdown or make a tackle again. For the rest of their lives, though, they will all need to add and read and write. They'll all need to balance their checkbooks and read bedtime stories to their children. Kids need to learn early that winning football games is great, but it's not nearly as important as winning in the classroom. The sooner they learn that lesson the better.
