Coast Guard Station Helps 'Blackbarry' The U.S. Coast Guard Oak Island Station helped escort a boat hack to Southport last Friday afternoon after receiving a call that the vessel was taking on water. Southport police contacted the station around 2:30 p.m. Friday re porting that the "Blackbarry" was taking on water approximately 100 yards off Frying Pan Shoals Light Tower, according to BMCS J.D. Arndt. The vessel radioed for help, and the station launched its 41 -foot boat to assist. The Coast Guard also re quested help from Marine Corps he licopter "Pedro" and Coast Guard Cutter "Block Island." The "Block Island" arrived on the scene first and assisted the crew of the "Blackbarry" until Oak Island's 41 -footer arrived. The helicopter was released from the case. Coast Guard officials determined that water was entering the vessel's stern area, possibly through a crack in the hull, whenever the engines were not engaged. Arndt said. The 4 1 -footer escorted the "Blackbarry" back to Southport. Coast Guardsmen monitored the bilge pump, which kept up with the incoming water as long as the boat kept moving forward. Arndt said Oak Island station re sponded to two calls on the after noon of Nov. 15, including one in volving a disabled boat off Shallotte Inlet with two people on board. The Brunswick County 911 Center contacted the Coast Guard at 5 p.m., and the Oak Island station launched its 44-foot boat to assist. Holden Beach rescue personnel reported a short while later that the disabled boat was on the beach. The two people suffered from mild hy pothermia but did not go to the hos pital for treatment, Arndt said. Earlier in the day, the Coast Guard received a call from the Southport Police Department re garding a 31-foot vessel that ran aground in the vicinity of Atlantic Intracoastal Waterway marker No. 1. After failing to locate commercial assistance, the station launched its 44-footer to investigate the situation and see if the crew of the "Ripple II" wanted to be removed from the grounded boat. Before the Coast Guard arrived on the scene, a private boat, "In tegrity," helped refloat the "Ripple II." Supewoman: Are You Invincible ? Or Not?
