Gause To Represent PEOPLE IN THE NEWS North Carolina As Congressional Scholar Monekia Latoya Gause, a senior at West Brunswick High School, has been invited by the National Youth Leader ship Council of Wa s h i n gton . D.C.. to repre sent North Car olina as a con gressional scho lar at the Na tional Young Leaders Confe- CAUSE rence to be held in February 1994 in the nation's capital. The NYLC identifies and honors selected exceptional high school stu dents for their scholastic achieve ment and leadership potential. Its conference provides an opportunity to acquaint the students with the branches of the federal government, bring to life the American Consti tutional process, and introduce them to governmental leaders. An honor student at West Bruns wick. Gause is the daughter of Free man and I>ouise Gause of Thom asboro. She plans to pursue a career in law. Honored At Bolivia Becky Harris, fourth-grade teac her at Bolivia Elementary School, is the school's October employee of the month. She earned her bachelor of arts degree from Methodist College and did her graduate work at Wingate. She has taught for 1 1 years in grades K-5. as well as the academically gifted students. Harris currently serves on the Faculty/Staff Advisory. Staff Dev elopment and Effective School com mittees. She and her family attend Pine Valley Methodist Church. She lives in Wilmington with her hus band John and two children. The school's volunteer of the month is Stephanie Gilbert, who work with the PTA and in several classrooms. Gilbert is enrolled in effective teaching training in preparation for substitute teaching. She lives in the Palmers Branch community with her husband Corky and two children. Gallagher Commended Navy Petty Officer 1st Class William O. Gallagher recently re ceived a Letter of Commendation. Gallagher was cited for superior performance of duty while assigned at Submarine Training Facility. Naval Station, Norfolk, Va. "He consistently performed his demand ing duties in an exemplary and high ly professional manner," a Navy news release states. Gallagher, whose wife Dehra is the daughter of Billy L. and Dorothy L. Buchanan of Leland. joined the Navy in March 1979. Trains At Great Lakes Navy Seaman Recruit Daniel H. Johnson, son of William L. and Deloise H. Johnson of Johnsontowne Way, Shallotte, recently com pleted basic training at Re cruit Training Command. Great Lakes. 111. During the cycle, recruits Johnson are taught general military subjects designed to prepare them for further academic and on-the-job training in one of the Navy's 85 occupational fields. Studies include seamanship, close -order drill, naval history and first aid. The 1993 graduate of West Brunswick High School joined the Navy in June 1993. Stvdent Of Month Stephanie Russo. a junior, is Stu dent of the Month at West Brunswick High School. A student as sistant in the at tendance office. Stephanie is the daughter of Janice Russo. She is active in her church, dra- RUSSO ma and the Future Business leaders of America. Her hobby is roller skating, and her favorite subject is physical sci ence. Her favorite teacher is Melba Johnson, who teaches English. She plans to attend Brunswick Com munity College to study in a busi ness-related field. According to Attendance Officer Ruth Johnson. Stephanie's duties in clude answering the phone, main taining attendance folders, filing, writing notes, delivering messages and locating students. Sailor Of The Quarter Navy Petty Officer 1st Class Randolph Pompey. son of Josephine P. Conyers of Leland, was recently selected as Sailor of the Ouarter with Commander. U.S. Second Fleet. Pompey was chosen as the top per former from among all the sailors as signed to the command and was cited for outstanding professional accom plishment, proficiency, leadership, initiative and military bearing. James A. Sullivan has been decorated with the Army Commendation Medal. The medal is awarded to those who demonstrate "outstanding achievement or meritorious service in the performance of their duties on behalf of the Army," a news release stated. Sullivan, an aircraft powerplant mechanic, is the son of William L. Sullivan of Route 2, Leland. and Patsy L. Norris of New Bern. He is a 1981 graduate of West Craven High School in Vanceboro. He earned an associate degree from Central Texas College, Killeen. in 1987. Carroll Trained Marine Pvt. Kdward A. Carroll son of Carol L. Hannah of I. eland, recently completed recruit training. During the training cycle at Marine Corps Recruit Depot. Parris Island, S.C.. recruits are taught the basics of battlefield survival, intro duced to typical military daily rou tine, and personal and professional standards. All recruits participate in an active physical conditioning program and gain proficiency in a variety of mili lary skills including first aid. rifle marksmanship and close-order drill. Teamwork and self-discipline are emphasized throughout the cycle. The 1991 graduate of George C. Marshall High School of Falls Church, Va.. joined the Marine Corps in February 1993. Attends Seminar Mickey C. Gilbert of Southport. a grades 9-10 algebra teacher at South Brunswick High School, recently at tended a seminar at the N.C. Center for the Advancement of Teaching. Gilbert was one of 22 North Carolina teachers participating in "Sound Health" Nov. 14-19. NCCAT. a unit of the University of North Carolina, provides "intel lectual and creative renewal experi ences for teachers." Teachers from every county in the state have partic ipated in center programs since NC CAT was established in 1985. Good Conduct Medal Marine Staff Sgt. Marcus T. Morgan, son of Lamon H. and Christabell B. Morgan of Supply, re cently received the Marine Corps Good Conduct Medal.
