Motorcyclists Plan
Children tend (o like motorcycles. And people
who ride motorcycles tend to like children.
Which explains why, for many years, bikers
across the country have organized annual "Toys
For Tots" rallies :o help young people less fortu
nate than themselves.
This year, for the first time ever, that effort is
coming to Brunswick County as local two-wheel
er enthusiasts prepare to hold the first annual
"Brunswick County Motorcyclists' Toy Run" on
Sunday, Dec 12.
Organizers plan to collect toys and raise money
to buy Christmas gifts for about 50 children,
ranging in ages from 2 to 17. who are currently in
foster care in Brunswick County, according to
Rally To Buy Toys For Foster Children
event organizer Jerome Munna of Supply.
Each motorcyclist who participates in the run
will bring a new toy worth at least $10 or an
equivalent cash contribution to be used for the
purchase of toys. The donations will be distrib
uted through the Bruns. County Dept. of Social
Services.
In addition, local businesses are making cash
contributions to the Toys For Tots effort, Munna
said. Those who give S30 or more will have their
name listed on a professionally designed T-shirt
commemorating the event. The shirts will be
available for $S c^ch. All proceeds will be used
for toys to be donated to local foster children.
"We've had nothing but positive feedback from
bikers and businesses and the people at social ser
vices," said Munna. "We already have more than
25 motorcyclists signed up."
Owners of all motorcycle makes, models and
nationalities are invited to participate in the toy
run, Munna said. Riders should bring their toys
and donations and meet in the Shallotte Plaza
parking lot at 1 p.m. The group will ride together
to Southport to pick up more donations, then head
to Bolivia to present them to DSS.
"We would really like to see this become an
annual event," Munna said.
For more information contact Munna at 754
5144. In the Southport area, call Buddy Sellers at
457-4647.
