PEOPLE IN THE NEWS Area Students Have Poem Published Waccamaw Elementary School eighth grade students Erica Minton and Tiffany Skaggs collaborated on a poem, "Our Dream World" re cently chosen for publication in a competition sponsored by The National Library of Poetrv, Owings Mills. Md. A-f MINTON SKAGGS The two said last week their effort had received an Editors Choice Award for outstanding achievement in poetry, placing in the top 3 per cent of all entries, "just a few people away from the money." It will ap |X'ar in a volume of poetry titled Whispers in the Wind," published by the contest sponsor. "Our Dream World" describes an Earth without hunger, war, illness, homelessness or pollution, and where all are equal. Caroon Elected C.B. "Cash" Caroon of Southport has been elected to the North Caro lina Fisheries Association Board of Directors to represent the Southport District. Caroon. owner of Caroon Crab Co. in Southport, was elected at the fisheries association's 41st annual meeting held recently in Atlantic Beach. A former chairman of the North Carolina Marine Fisheries Com mission, Caroon is also a former mayor and alderman in Southport. The N.C. Fisheries Association is a non-profit trade group that repre sents the state's commercial fisher men. seafood dealers and proces sors. Completes Course Kyle M. Jones and Vickie L. Poole of Shallotte are among the 13 students who completed Basic Law Enforcement Training this fall at Southeastern Community College near Whiteville. JONES POOLE The graduates are qualified to work as probationary law enforce ment officers in North Carolina po lice and sheriff's departments. The intensive II -week course is offered twice each year at South eastern. Sailor Of Quarter Navy Petty Officer 1st Class William O. Gallogher recently re ceived the Navy Achievement Me dal and was selected Sailor of the Quarter. Gallogher's wife Debra is the daughter of Billy L. and Dorothy Buchanan of Baldwin Drive, Le land. He was chosen the top achiever from all people in his unit and re ceived the Navy Achievement Me dal based on individual superior per formance of duty at Submarine Training Facility, Naval Station. Norfolk, Va. He joined the Navv in March 1979. Christmas Queens Two local girls were among win ners in the Nov. 21 Brunswick Islands Christmas Pageant. Reports To Hawaii Navy Airman Apprentice Curtis M. Workman recently reported for duty at Pacific Missile Range Facility, Kekaha. Hawaii. He is the son of Curtis L. and Dana L. Workman of Boiling Spring Lakes. The 1989 graduate of South Brunswick High School joined the Navy ir, February 1993. Hintmeyer Reenlists Navy Chief Petty Officer Ralph E. Hintmeyer, son of Dorothy N. Meyer of Southport, recently reen listed for six years while serving aboard the submarine USS Key West, homeported in Norfolk. Va. He joined the Navy in October 1981. Completes Navy Basic Navy Seaman Recruit Christopher E. Washell. son of William G. and Elaine Washell of Wildwood Vil lage. Shallotte, recently completed basic training at Recruit Training Command. Great l^akes. III. During the cycle, recruits are taught general military subjects de signed to prepare them for further academic and on-the-job training in one of the Navy's 85 occupational fields. Studies include seamanship, close-order drill, naval history and first aid. The 1993 graduate of Moshannon Valley High School of Houtzdale, Pa., joined the Navy in June 1993. Henry Promoted Marine Gunnery Sgt. Kevin L. Henry, son of Mariabelle B. and Harry W. Henry Sr. of Supply, was recently promoted to his present rank while serving with Marine Attack Squadron 214, 3rd Marine Aircraft Wing, Marine Corps Air Station. Yuma, Arizona. In a letter, the asso ciation expressed its wish to "help health crisis workers continue to provide their much-appreciated emergency medical service to the Calabash area community." 1 7 Trained As Reading Tutors Seventeen North Brunswick High School students trained Nov. 17 to become volunteer literacy tutors. Trainer Joan Altman of the Brunswick County Literacy Council conducted the workshop for Stu dents Tutoring and Reading (STAR), a program initiated by the Ixland area high school earlier this fall. The high school students travel to nearby Leland Middle and Lincoln Primary schools to provide tutoring to younger students who wish to im prove their reading skills. In addition to tutoring in the schools, some of the high school students will work with students in the community. New tutors are Rhonda Clem mons, Kerri Edge. Jazmin Capezza.
