Johnson spent
the week of
Nov. 8 providing clerical an admin
istrative support as a page in the
Department of Correction.
"This program is a great way for
young people like Willa to see first
hand how state government works,"
said Gov. Jim Hunt. "They play a vi
tal role in making our government
run smoothly, and I hope this experi
ence will pave the way for future
leaders of our state."
Pages are assigned to various
state agencies to assist with day-to
day office operations. While in Ra
leigh. they tour several government
buildings including the Capitol, the
Legislative Building, the Executive
Mansion and the Museum of His
tory.
Pages are recommended by their
teachers, principals or members of
their community to serve a one
week term. The program is open to
high school students between the
ages of 15 and 18 who maintain a B
average.

Navy Airman Apprentice Curtis
M. Workman recently reported for
duty at Pacific Missile Range
Facility. Kekaha. Hawaii.
He is the son of Curtis L. and
Dana L. Workman of Boiling Spring
Ijkes. The 1989 graduate of South
Brunswick High School joined the
Navy in February 1993.
Stationed In Japan
Marine Sgt. Robert K. Grassman
recently reported for duty with 9th
Engineer Support Battalion. 3rd
Force Service Support Group,
Okinawa, Japan.
The sergeant's wife Charlotte is
the daughter of Donald Mahncke of
Northwest Drive, Calabash. The
1985 graduate of John Jay Senior
High School of Katonah-Lewisboro,
N.Y., joined the Marine Corps in
September 1984.
Benson Is Honored
GS-12 Samuel Benson recently
received the Navy Meritorious
Civilian Service Award.

Benson was cited for superior
performance of duty while serving
as a quality assurance officer at
Shore Intermediate Maintenance
Activity, Portsmouth, Va., where he
is currently assigned. "There, he
played the central role in the com
mand's designation as the first shore
facility on the East Coast to become
certified to repair non-nuclear pro
pulsion plants on nuclear-powered
ships." according to a Navy news re
lease.
"He also significantly improved
the unit's quality assurance program,
upgrading training, inspection pro
cedures. instructional manuals, and
work processes. In addition, he pro
vided excellent technical advice and
assistance to U.S. Atlantic Fleet air
craft carriers concerning their quali
ty assurance inspections and audits.
The awards, presented during for
mal ceremonies, "is official recogni
tion for Benson's outstanding per
formance, diligence, professional
expertise and steadfast dedication to
quality customer service." according
to the Navy.

Accepted At Wesleyan
Matthew E. Ruff, son of Mr. and
Mrs. Eugene S. Ruff of Supply, has
been accepted to N.C. Wesleyan
College in Rocky Mount this fall.
He is planning to major in justice
and public policy.
N.C. Wesley an is a private four
year coeducational liberal arts col
lege affiliated with the United
Methodist Church. It offers 20 major
fields of study and enrolls 730 tradi
tional students on the main campus
in Rocky Mount and 1,155 adult stu
dents in degree programs in Rocky
Mount, Raleigh, New Bern and
Goldsboro.
Takes Aviation Course
Navy Airman Recruit Curtis M.
Workman, son of Curtis L. and Dana

Boiling Spring Lakes, recently com
pleted the Basic Aviation Structural
Mechanic Course.
During the court at Naval Air
Technical Training Center, Naval
Air Station, Memphis, Millington,
Tenn.. students receive instruction
on the inspection, maintenance and
repair of aircraft frames and exteri
ors as well as bluepring reading,
corrosion control and metal-work
ing.

Navy in January 1993.
Hill Promoted

Timothy L. Hill, son of Louis A.
Fulwood of Supply, was recently
promoted to his present rank while
serving with Naval Security Group
Activity, Fort George G. Meade,
Md.
The 1988 graduate of Northern
Durham High School joined the
Navy in June 1992.
Earns Master's Degree
Christine Chiharu Miller of
Riverview Drive, Leland. was
awarded a master's degree in Eng
lish from East Carolina University
on Dec. 11.
The university conferred degrees
and certificates of advanced study
on more than 2,000 graduates.
Finishes Navy Course

nics Course.

Supply Elementary Lists First Quarter Honor Roll
Supply Elementary School has
announced its honors roll for the
first quarter grading period of the
1993-94 school term.
Students who earned all A's and
S's qualifed for the A Team, while
those who earned all A's. B's and S's

each marking period at a student as
