Mayor Judy Galloway also was in stalled for another two-year term. Leland Sanitary District Election Scheduled Feb. 8 BY SUSAN USHER On Feb. 8 voters in Leland Sanitary District will go to the polls a second time to elect a five-member gov erning board. The Brunswick County Board of Elections set the new date last week after the N.C. Board of Elections nullified results of the Nov. 2 election because of irregu larities. At Ixland precinct, 65 people voted in the dis trict election who did not reside in the district. Only four votes separated the last two candidates in the six-way race for five seats, challenger John Harvey, who re ceived 398 votes, and incumbent Julius Adams, who re ceived 394 votes. Other candidates, whose names will appear again on the Feb. 8 ballot, are Joseph Gainey, Elgie Jones, Albert Mitchell and Edison Moore. Residents of the district who are not registered to vote in Brunswick County get a second chance to partic ipate in the election. Voter registration books for the Leland Sanitary District race will close Jan. 17. In a matter to the Leland Sanitary District balloting. the county elections hoard will conduct a hearing on the registrar of Leland Precinct Jan. 1 1 at 10 a.m., probably in the county commissioners' chambers, said Britt. Guided by the Administrative Code guidelines of the State Elections Board, the board will question and hear witnesses in the matter and then draw up a report indi cating its findings of fact and conclusions of law. The process is nearly identical to that followed in hearings on election irregularities, said Britt. "The only difference is this time the board was ordered to see if it feels there was any wrongdoing on the part of the regis trar." While the county board will report its findings and any resulting action to the state board, the local board has final authority in the matter, said Britt. To clear another item still pending from the Nov. 2 election, the county elections board will meet in special session Dec. 29 at 4 p.m. to address seven voter chal lenges from the Long Beach municipal election that, fol lowing hearings on Nov. 18 and 19, were tabled until more information could be obtained. At its meeting Monday night the town board accepted the bid of a lo cal company, Varnam's Docks & Bulkheads, which has agreed to do the work at a cost of $ 1 9,500. No other bids were received on the project, which has been a major issue this year in Varnamtown. Some residents have expressed op position to the plan, saying a new ramp would attract unwanted tourists and add to traffic problems. But town officials say most resi dents support the plan to improve the old ramp at the end of Fisherman Road. The ramp is in p?>or condition and has caused damage to some boats. The N.C. Wildlife Resources Commission will provide up to $25,000 for the new concrete ramp, which will be 16 feet wide and 72 feet long. The project will include a 3-foot-wide pier between the ramp and Garland's Seafood House. Although the state is providing funds, the ramp will be maintained by the town. Varnamtown also will be required to provide free parking and ramp access as a condition of using the state money. The town plans to lease a parking area adjacent to Garland's Seafood House that will provide space for approximately 20 vehicles with boat trailers. Landowners Nicky and Jackie Varnam have agreed to lease the property for a period of 15 years. The town will pay $2,1^0 per year, with a cost increase possible after the first five years. Town officials said Monday any state money not spent on the ramp itself will be used to improve the parking area. Varnamtown's planning board will meet Friday at 7:30 p.m. at town hall to discuss the ramp con struction and parking. Board Installed Monday's meeting started with District Court Judge Napoleon B. Barefoot Jr. administering the oath of office to Aldermen Ada Mc Donald and Ennis Swain, who won re-election in November. Mayor Judy Galloway also was returned to office. "We appreciate this and hope this is the only time we will ever have to appear before you." she told Judge Barefoot. Swain, who was re-appointed as mayor pro tem by the town board, urged residents to notify the county tax office if they are not pleased with their property revaluations. In other business Monday, Al derman Will Mumford was asked to look into purchasing "Welcome to Varnamtown" signs to he displayed at the entrance to the community. "We've been here five years now." Mayor Galloway said. "It's time for everybody to know where we're at." No Wake Signs Where are the bureaucrats when you need them? Several months ago. Varnamtown officials contacted several county, state and federal agencies looking for information on "No Wake" zones. Nobody could provide the in formation they needed. "None admitted to having any thing to do with the sNo Wake' signs," Swain said Monday. After several new signs were put up along the Varnamtown water front, the N.C. Wildlife Resources Commission got involved. The state has asked the town to move one of the signs that was placed too far up stream and present a formal request to extend the "No Wake" zone. The town board plans to comply. BOATS "safe and unsinkable" 1-800-545-2293 910-457-9080 The difference is perfectly clear... Aqm-Pum. i The cure for troubled water. AQUA-PURE WATER SOFTENER ?
