Union School's 'Secret Santas' Bring Christmas Cheer To 91 Kids BY SUSAN USHER A number of local families will have a special Christmas because of Union Elementary School's "Secret Santa" project. Faculty, staff, parents, several lo cal churches and businesses worked together to provide Christmas gifts for 91 children who are either stu dents at the school or older, school age brothers and sisters of Union students, said Trisha Poulos, volun teer coordinator. "Some people have been overly generous, and we even had one fire department. Ocean Isle Beach, adopt a child." The effort came about in response to a concerned parent whose child had shared lunch with another stu dent who didn't seem to have enough food, said Poulos. School personnel were asked to help identify families that might welcome a helping hand at Christ mas and questionnaires were sent to those households asking permission for children to receive "gifts from Santa." Some families didn't respond, but many of those that did have been very appreciative of the help. Poulos said. Recipients' identities remained confidential. The school compared lists with the Brunswick Volunteer and Infor mation Center to avoid duplication, then set about recruiting Santa's helpers. In addition to providing each child three articles of clothing and a toy, funds donated by Camp and Seaside United Methodist churches were used to buy coats and shoes for students who needed them. "The idea behind this was that we didn't want the children to suffer whatever the reason (he family needs help, even if it is because of the parents' inability to set priorities or make good choices in using household funds," said Poulos. "The whole idea was to make sure these children all have something for Christmas and to see that some of the kids who have been coming to school in short sleeves will have coats to wear. "We're thankful so many people were willing to pitch in and help to meet these needs." The school has a small sum of money left. If no more immediate needs emerge, said Poulos, the mon ey will be used to start an emer gency fund to help meet students' needs year-round.
