TROJANS IN UCB CLASSIC High School Teams Playing Holiday Hoops BY DOUG RUTTER School's out for the holidays, but that doesn't mean there isn't plenty of high school basketball action on the menu. Four Brunswick County high school teams are expected to partici pate in holiday basketball tourna ments next week, including the West Brunswick boys and girls squads. The West Brunswick boys of Coach Charlie Stevens will compete in the UCB Holiday Classic next Tuesday through Thursday, Dec. 28 30, at UNC-Wilmington's Trask Coliseum. The Trojans will enter the tourna ment with just two games under their belt. The start of the season was postponed two weeks because of the football team's run for the state championship. In first-round action Tuesday, West Brunswick will play Meadow brook High of Richmond, Va., at 6:30 p.m. Other opening-round games are Wilmington Laney versus McMic hael (Mayodan. N.C.) at 5 p.m.; Wilmington Hoggard versus LaSalle (Wyndmoor. Pa.) at 8; and Wil mington New Hanover versus New port (Bellevue, Va.) at 9:30. If the Trojans win their first game, they will play Wednesday at 8 p.m. against the winner of the New Hanover-Newport game. If West Brunswick loses its first game, it will play Wednesday at 3:30. The hoys' championship game is scheduled Thursday at 9 p.m. Ad mission to the tournament is $6 per day for adults and $4 for students. Tournament passes good for all three days will cost $15 for adults and S10 for students. The four girls' teams participating in this year's Holiday Classic are New Hanover, Laney, Hoggard and Orange (Hillsborough). The girls' championship game will be Wed nesday at 6:30 p.m. While the West Brunswick boys play in Wilmington, Coach Brenda RECREATION BRIEFS County Agency Offers Ski Trips The Brunswick County Parks and Recreation Department will sponsor two downhill ski trips in 1994. A trip to Timberline, W.Va., has been scheduled for Jan. 21-24. Cost of the trip is $199 for transportation, lodging, rentals, two days of skiing and five meals. If you have your own skis, the cost is $165. A second trip is scheduled for Snowshoe, W.Va., March 4-7. The fee is $253.82 per person and in cludes transportation, lodging, rentals, two days of skiing and eight meals. Space is limited. Participants must he at least 21 years old. Aerobics Aerobics classes at Lockwood Folly Community Building have been cancelled for December. The class will resume Jan. 4 and will meet Tuesday and Thursday even ings from 6:30-7:30 p.m. A low-impact aerobics class will be held on Mondays and Wednes days at the Waccamaw Community Building from 8-9 p.m. beginning Jan. 3. Classes will cost $15 per month or $3 to drop in. Spring Rafting A double dose of spring rafting has been scheduled for May 14-17 on the Cheat and Upper Youghiogh eny rivers. The group will camp out three nights. Total trip cost is $219.54 per person and will include transporta tion, six meals, two days of rafting and camping. A $45 deposit is due by Jan. 1. Auxiliary Offering Safe Boating Class Flotilla 10-05 of the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary will be conducting a boating safety and seamanship course starting Thursday, Jan. 6. Classes will be held every Thurs day at 7:30 p.m. at the Oak Island Coast Guard Station at Caswell Beach. The course runs for 13 weeks. Each student will be required to pay S20 for materials. For the second straight year. South Brunswick's girls will host their own Christmas tournament in Boiling Spring Lakes. Games are slated next Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday. In first-round action Tuesday, Jacksonville plays West Florence at 4 p.m.; Northern Nash battles Union at 5:30; Dixon faces Sumter (S.C.) at 7; and South Brunswick plays Myrtle Beach (S.C.) at 8:30. The consolation game is sched uled Thursday at 7 p.m., followed by the tournament championship game at 8:30. While the Lady Cougars stay home for the holidays, Coach Gene Doane will take the South Bruns wick boys to Columbus County for the Whiteville Christmas Tourna ment. The Cougars will be part of a strong field that also includes West Columbus, Jones Senior and tourna ment host Whiteville. Games are slated next Tuesday and Wednesday, Dec. 28 and 29. On Tuesday, West Columbus will face Jones Senior at 6:30 p.m., and South Brunswick will take on Whiteville at 8:30. The consolation game is Wednesday at 6:30 p.m., followed by the championship game at 8:30. South Brunswick, West Colum bus and Whiteville compete in the Waccamaw 2A/3A Conference, while Jones is a member of the Coastal Plains 1A Conference. The Trojans are the defending state 1A champions. The Whiteville tournament re turns after a one-year absence. A post-game shooting incident forced officials to cut the 1991 tournament short, and the event was not held last year.
