Hands-On Involvement Gives Students Look At Broad Range Of Occupations -mm. urti It seemed like the perfect opportunity. Career education teacher Lois Morgan was look ing for ways to expose her Shallotte Middle School students to as many different occupations as possible. Real estate developer Buddy Milliken was plan ning a self-reliant, close-knit community to he built on a tract he owns adjacent to the school. He wanted to know the kinds of activities children would enjoy in such a setting. Why not bring the two together? Milliken and Morgan decided at a meeting of the South Brunswick Islands Chamber of Commerce Education Committee, on which Kith serve. Milliken brought scaled drawings into the class room and shared his ideas with students. Working from a scaled plot mat. the students brainstormed for several days, then each drew a scale map and sketched his or her ideas for "their" community. Then 21 students and Morgan took a first-hand look at the site with Milliken. Tramping through the woods off Pender Street for 2V-. hours, they observed terrain that ranged from wetlands to low hills, with a former turpentine still site. The tract includes good specimens of native hardwoods as well as some pro tected plant species. Invigorated with fresh ideas, some students went hack to the drawing board to add or delete ideas from their plans. During early discussions, the middle school stu dents came up with at least 28 occupations that would he involved in the development process at some point, said Morgan. "I could tell them about those things. They may read about them. But when they see and touch, it lie comes reality, and this is the kind of teaching 1 like," said Morgan. As a result of their hands-on experience, some stu dents found they had no interest, aptitude or ability for this kind of work, while others found it to their liking. Morgan said several students will be following the pro ject through its actual development. Milliken has shared the students' drawings at a seminar with professionals who are working with him on the project. He has also involved graduate students in the School of Design at N.C. State University in project development. As a result of the cooperative venture, said Morgan, "Who knows. These students may become land planners, architects, civil engineers, environmen tal analysts, topographical drafters, conservation tech nicians or market researchers."
