Martin Mariettas Plans and Its Commitment to the People of Brunswick County Over the past few weeks, we have done our very best to be responsive to the questions and le gitimate concerns of Brunswick County citizens. We have been very open and honest in our dealings with the community, with the county commission and other elected and appointed officials. We have tried to answer every question to the best of our ability. We have recently received a list of questions and comments from DEHNR. We intend to answer these fully, as well. We are confident that the permit we have requested will not be granted until and unless those questions are answered to DEHNR's satisfaction and they are convinced that our opera tions will be as safe and as environmentally responsible as our other North Carolina facilities. Martin Marietta Is Willing to Share Information There are those in Brunswick County who have stated publicly their opposition to our proposed quarry. We believe that their opposition is based on inaccurate information and a misunderstanding of our intent. Therefore, we are offering to provide not only our consultants' reports to the Brunswick County Commission for review and analysis, but we will also agree to pay reasonable fees, provided arrangements are made in advance, for the county to hire their own consultants to review this work. Our Pledge to You If the facts show that Martin Marietta cannot operate in a manner that is safe and environmen tally sound, we will withdraw our permit application for the Brunswick quarry. If, on the other hand, the facts show that our operations will indeed be as safe and environmentally responsible as are all of our other operations, we would hope that the County Commission and those who have been in oppo sition will welcome Martin Marietta as a new neighbor. This is a risk-free approach for the county. Rights Must Be Protected The citizens of Brunswick County have a right to be assured that any new facility or business that comes into their community observes every law and regulation, both in its siting and in its opera tion. They likewise have a right to expect their elected and appointed officials to ask "tough" ques tions of organizations that seek to be a part of their community. We expect it and have done our very best to comply. Martin Marietta, as a North Carolina corporation that brings millions of dollars in economic ben efit, creates thousands of jobs, pays taxes and follows the State's laws and regulations, also has a right to protect its corporate good name, its investments and its employees from unfair, inaccurate and irre sponsible allegations and actions. We intend to take any and all actions necessary to assure that our rights and those of our stockholders and employees are likewise protected by the same laws and regulations under which we must operate. We hope that such actions will not be necessary and we are confident that our good faith offer to share information and work together will allow everyone to en joy the benefits that we know we can bring to Brunswick County. If you have any questions, please give me or John Long a call at (919) 781-4550, or you can write to us at Martin Marietta Aggregates, 2710 Wycliff Rd., Raleigh, NC 27607 and we'll personally see that your questions are answered. Sincerely, President Af>i/?r/yv am
