SPORTING SCENE Basketball Teams Ready For Conference Batties; \A/?r?+ Q rn/i/mhijc f T t Jl ? UWUJ w ? wwi w ? Ready or not, conference play kicks off this week and next week for irea high school basketball teams. West Brunswick's Trojans, still adjusting to life after football, will open jilav in the Waccamaw Conference next Tuesday with a home game uoug Rutter Sports Editor Most of West Brunswick's play rs?including starters Eric Johnson, I imothy Daniels and Derek h'rink? missed several weeks of pre-season practice due to the extended football season. They're still trying to get in bas 'Ctoaii shape while adjusting to the new system installed by first-year >.ich Charlie Stevens. The Trojans lost four of their first five games, but iiey have faced solid competition. South Columbus has looked pretty strong in its non-conference games, he Stallions are led by 6-foot-10 center Carl Wright and b-foot-3 guard Brandon Simmons, won the slam dunk contest at last week's Pepsi Carolina lassie high school tournament in Florence, S.C. South Brunswick's Cougars will not open Waccamaw Conference play 111,1 next Friday when they travel to Cerro Gordo to face the West olumbus Vikings. I'he Cougars can use the time to prepare. Going into Tuesday night's uitest against Topsail, Coach Gene Doane's club had lost four straight imes and six of its first eight. North Brunswick's Scorpions, off to a fine 5-2 start, open play in the "v Three Rivers Conference this Friday night against visiting Fairmont. It should be a tough test for the Coach Garry's Bishop's Scorpions. The ?olden Tornadoes posted a combined record of 52-3 during the 1(>(>I-1>2 and I W2-93 seasons. North Brunswick, always loaded with good athletes, seems to have that 'Mtive, winning attitude this season that has been missing in recent years. ' he Scorps could be a force in the Three Rivers. Six Bow/ Winners It wasn't a great start to the new year, but it could have been worse. I "rrectly predicted the winners of six of the nine New Year's Day college "wl games. I left plenty of room for improvement for the rest of 1994. An.>?,s rr.y correct picks were two huge losses by Atlantic Coast 'inference schools. Michigan's Wolverines thumped N.C. State, 42-7. ?hile Boston College whipped Virginia, 31-13. I also picked Wisconsin s win in the Rose Bowl. Notre Dame's struggle victory in the Cotton Bowl. Arizona's upset of Miami in the Fiesta Bowl Southern's win over South Carolina State in the Heritage Bowl. 1 missed Penn State's win over Tennessee in the Citrus Bowl, Florida s 'f ishing of West Virginia in the Sugar, and of course, Florida State's win ver Nebraska in the national championship game. ! took a chance by predicting a Cornhusker upset in the Orange and it ? >rly paid off. NFL Playoff Picks I he National Football l-eague playoffs start this weekend and continue trough Jan. 30 when the NFC and AFC champions will meet in Atlanta's >rgia Dome for the Super Bowl. Conspicuous in their absence from this year s playoffs are my beloved i'hiladelphia Hagles. It was a tougn year for the Birds, but I'm proud of the ay they played and overcame injuries to several key players. It wasn't a great season for the Eagles, but at least they finished with a l"er record than the Washington Redskins. As tar as this week's wildcard playoll games are concerned, it s time to 'lake some predictions. In the National Football Conference. I see the New York Giants advanc 'K with a win over Minnesota and the Green Bay Packers moving to the ?econd round with a upset victory in Detroit. In the AFC Kansas City will defeat the punchless Pittsburgh Steelers ?"HI the Denver Broncos will advance to the second round with a win over 11 I.os Angeles Raiders. , . ... By the way, please disregard any and all of my predictions it you plan 1 place a bet. You'll thank me later.
