Catherine Moore, Owner David Thompson Clinic Set At South Brunswick BY DOUG RUTTER David Thompson, one of the biggest college basketball stars to ever play in North Carolina, is coming to Brunswick County next week to teach a free basketball clinic. The former All-American at North Carolina State University will conduct the clinic next Wednesday, Jan. 12, in the South Brunswick High school It starts at 6:15 p.m. Joe Rosselli, county athlctic coordinator, said the clinic is open to children and adults. "Anyone who wants to see David Thompson can come. We're hoping to have about 2(X) people," he said. Thompson, a native of Shelby, helped lead N.C. State to a 30-1 record and the national championship during the 1973-74 season, when he was named college player of the year. He also led the Wolfpack to an undefeated season (27-0) in 1972-73, when State wasn't eligible for the NCAA Tournament, and a 22-6 recotd as a senior in 1974-75. Described by some as the "Michael Jordan of the '70s," Thompson was best known for his astounding vertical leap. The Atlanta Hawks drafted Thompson with the first overall pick in the 1975 NBA draft. Thompson is the all-time leading scorer at N.C. State with 2,309 points. He led the Wolfpack in scoring each of his three varsity seasons and holds 10 individual career scoring records at State. Thompson, inducted into the North Carolina Sports Hall of Fame in 1982. now works for the NBA's Charlotte Hornets. Rosselli said the local basketball clinic was arranged through the Jr. Hornets program, a promotional campaign of the Hornets. This is the first year Brunswick County has been associated with the Jr Hornets program. Each child who plays youth basketball this winter will receive a Jr. Hornets jersey and other items. "Their involvement with youth sports is not a fly-by-night thing. "They're really dedicated," Rosselli said of the Hornets. "Kids should wear sneakers to the clinic because they may be asked to participate." Joining Thompson at the clinic will be Carl Clayton and Jim Wilson of the Hornets organization. Registration for the Brunswick County Parks and Recreation Department youth basketball league will conclude this Saturday. Boys and girls ages 5 to 15 can sign up from 9 a.m. until 11 a.m. at Shallotte Middle School, Leland Middle School or South Brunswick Middle School. The fee is $10, and children should come ready to prac tice. For more information on the basketball league or next week's clinic, call Rosselli at 253-4357 or 1-800-222-4790. \ CARIBBEAN ] CRUISE SALE 1 50% Off i Holland America l 7-night cruises have been 11.1 A ? 1 i 1 1 extended thru April.
