SOFT DRINK BOTTLES & MILK JUGS Brunswick County Recycling Sites Now Accepting Two Types Of Plastic BY SUSAN USHER We rc taking some plastics now." That may not sound earth-shatter ing. hut lor Brunswick County Re cycling Coordinator Mary McCarley the county's recent venture into plastic recycling is a milestone she won't forget soon. "That's the one thing I've heard the most concern: about since I took this job a year and a half ago?find ing a means of recycling plastics," McCarley said during a recent inter v iew. I m really glad we're doing this, but I wasn't going to start ac cepting plastics until we had a viable market for them." The county now pays its solid waste contractor. Waste Industries Inc.. to accept the plastics, which the company then resells. Bottles of two types of plastic are being accepted at the county's five recycling sites These are polyethyl ene teraphthalate (PET) or No. I plastics, which is used to make two liier soft drink bottles, and high-den sity polyethylene (HOPE) or No. 2 plastics, used in making bleach and milk jugs. However, dark colors, such as the plastic sleeves on some soft drink bottles, can't be used by the company which buys the bottles and shouldn't be taken in for recy cling. Consumers can tell if a plastic bottle can be recycled by checking the bottom for a three-arrow loop with a number inside, McCarley said If the number is a "I" or "2" it can be recycled. If no number is found on the bottom, she suggests checking the label. Plastics need to be sorted by number either in ad vance, or at the recycling site. The five recycling sites also ac cept newspapers, rinsed and crushed aluminum cans, and rinsed white, clear and green glass jars with lids removed. Recycling station sites and hours are as follows: ?N.C. y(U Convenience Site, near Old Georgetown Road. 7:30 -7:30 p.m., Mon.-Sat.; II a.m.-7 p.m. Sun.; ?Ocean Isle Transfer Station, S a.m.-4:30 p.m.. Mon.-Sat.; ?Oxpen Convenience Site, N.C. 130 East. 7:30 a.m.-7 pm.. Mon. Sat.; 11 a.m.-7 p.m. Sun.; ?Southport Transfer Station. N.C. 87. 8 a.m.-4:30 p.m. Mon.-Sat.; ?I.cland Transfer Station, 8 a.m. 4:30 p.m.. Mon.-Sat. Five more convenience/recycling sites are in the planning. McCarley said, with the next facility to b^* lo cated at Winnabow. Others will be at the county sanitary landfill in Sup ply, on N.C. 211. and in the North west and Waccamaw areas. Only seven of Brunswick County's municipalities have active recycling programs, though the state Kae u!! !c<c?j! govern^"0*0 will reducing the waste stream. In the South Brunswick Islands. Ilolden Beach and Calabash have staffed drop-off centers and Ocean Isle Beach has an unstaffed drop-off Recycling For Christmas Trees Offered Wondering what to do with your Christmas tree now that the holidays are finally over? Why not recycle it? Rninswirk County will soon be under contract with a company 'hat grinds trees, branches and other yard waste into a mulch that can be used for landscaping and gardening, according to county Recycling Coordinator Mary McCarley. As a result, Christmas trees are now being accepted at any of the coun ty's three solid waste transfer sites or the two convenience sites for recy cling. Special containers will be set aside at each site for transporting the trees to the landfill, where they will be stored until the "tub grinder" ser vice begins. Within the next 30 days, the useful mulch material will be available free of charge on a first-come, first-servtd basis for use in landscaping or composting, McCarley said. For more information on the county's recycling programs, call the Brunswick County Engineering Department at 253-4488. center. Shallotte. Sunset Beach anil Varnamtown do not have town sponsored recycling programs. Bald Head Village. Southport. Long Beach. Caswell Beach and North Brunswick High School in Iceland also have recycling programs. "We don't care if people recycle through the county or collect materi als :>nil take them to a nrivate recv cler." said McCarley. "We just want to encourage people to recycle." At both the landfill and transfer stations. Brunswick County also ac cepts wood and yard waste for mulching, household-type waste, and "white gixxls" such as refrigerators. The landiill also takes old tires for shredding, building and remodeling materials, non-regulated medical waste, ash and fly ash. wastewater treatment sludge and nutals. animal carcasses; dry paint and paint cans and drums and barrels that have been perforated. Some of the items must be disposed of in specific areas of the landfill. McCarley maintains a list of ven dors who take items such as scrap metal, old batteries and used motor oil. Her office coordinates an office recycling project at the government center, accepting white ledger, com puter, mixed papers, newspapers and aluminum cans. Each spring or early summer she also coordinates a coun tywide telephone book recycling program, accepting old books when new ones are distributed. A five-compartment mobile recy cling trailer is available for loan to non-profit organizations and festi vals. Items collected can be disposed of through the county recycling pro gram or at the user's choice. From July 1. 1092. through June 30. 1993, the county and municipali ties collected X50 tons of recy clables. That included glass, plas tics. metal and paper, but not tires or yard waste. McCarley has seen the volume of materials recycled locally increase hut n??t ??? rinidlv ;k thr* ?? '' --J J volume of materials going into the county landfill for burial. Though recycling twice as much as two years ago, Brunswick County resi dents are still recycling only about 4 percent of all solid waste. "If everyone would recycle just one thing it would help." insists McCarley. "It all adds up."
