SPORTING SCFNF Decker Knocks 'Em Down I'm not much of a howler, hut I've seen enough local howling league results over the last few years to know that Terry Decker is one of the hest around. A ll)93 graduate of West Brunswick High School, Terry is the 18-year old son of Roland and Bonnie Decker of Shallotte. When it comes to bowl ing. this is a young man who knows wliai lie's doing. Competing in the Men's Classic League last Monday night at Bruns wick County Bowling Center, Terry rolled games of 299. 279 and 257 for an 835 scratch series. The 835 is a new scratch series record for the Wilmington Men's Doug Rutter Sports Editor Bowling Association, which includes the Shallotte lanes and three howling alleys in Wilmington. Terry's series not only broke Phillip Barnes* old association record ot 814 pins, it shattered Terry's previous high series of 777 by 58 pins. "It was just one of those things. I was in a zone, and 1 just kept throw ing." said Terry, who works at Brunswick County Bowling Center and North Myrtle Beach Bowling Center. Terry was the South Carolina state junior champion during the l<)91-92 season and he carries a 209 average at the local lanes. In addition to (he Men's Classic League on Mondays. Terry bowls in the Woodmen of the World League every Friday night. Terry has been bowling for about 10 years and says he plans to turn pro fessional as soon as he can find a sponsor Chapel Hill Memories West Brunswick's dramatic. 19-14 win over High Point Andrews in last month's state 3A championship game may go down as the greatest football game in school history. The West Brunswick Athletic Booster Club is selling videotapes of the game, played Dec. 10 at the University of North Carolina's Kenan Stadium in Chapel Hill. If you like, you can fast-forward through the first three quarters to get to the really good stuff. Like the two big catches by Timmy Daniels, the punt return by Steve Holmes and the now-famous Phillip Johnson "fumbleroos ki" that sparked the game-winning drive. The booster club already has received more than 35 orders for the game film and is making one "last call" for anyone interested. The video costs $20. To place an order call Bobby Williamson at 754-6619. mcGriff Helping Hawks ! took in the UNCW-George Mason basketball game Saturday night and got to a lot of former South Brunswick star Preston McGriff. McGriff scored six points and grabbed 10 rebounds in 23 minutes against the Patriots. The 6-11 center was a force on the defensive end of the floor, blocking and altering shots like he used to do at South Brunswick. McGriff. who looks a lot more intimidating since he shaved his head, should have a bright future with the Seahawks. NFL Playoff Picks And then there were eight. The National Football League playoffs continue this weekend. By Sunday night we'll know the four teams that will compete in the conference championships next weekend. I was 3-1 picking last week's wildcard games, missing only the Los Angeles Raiders' victory over the Denver Broncos. This Saturday, I expect the warm-weather Raiders and their deep pass ing attack to wither in frigid Buffalo. That's right, the Bills advance to an other AFC title game. Who will they face? How about the Houston Oilers? The Oilers, despite feuding among the coaches, will demolish the Kansas City Chiefs in the Dome on Sunday. In the NFC. I'm looking for a pair of division rivals to hook up in the conference championship game. The New York Giants will control the clock against the San Francisco 49ers this Saturday and advance to face the Dallas Cowboys, who will have no problem disposing of the Green Bay Packers on Sunday.
