Socastee Sweeps Brunswick
To Win NC/SC Challenge

Socastee's wrestling team swept
all three Brunswick County high
school squads to win the North
Carolina/South Carolina Challenge
tournament Saturday in the South
Brunswick gym.
The Braves had no trouble with
North Brunswick (47-6) or South
Brunswick (53-9). In the tightest
match of the day. the Braves bolted
out to an 18-0 lead over West Bruns
wick and held on for a 33-30 win.
"It turned out to be a real good
match," West Brunswick Coach Joe
Noble said of the bout with
Socastee. "I was real pleased with
how we wrestled, for once."
The Braves took a quick, 18-0
lead on the Trojans with a forfeit
win at 103 pounds and two pins by
Jeremy Holmes and Matt Bailey at
112 and 119 pounds respectively.
West Brunswick wins by Chris
Jackson. Barry Johnson and Al
Johnson in the next three matches
cut Socastee's lead to 18-9. At 140
pounds. Jason Kadecke pinned Otis
Brooks in 52 seconds to give the
Braves a 24-9 bulge.
West Brunswick would not fold.
Pins by Ja Mitchell at 145 pounds
and Eric Andreis at 152 cut
Socastee's lead to 24-21 with four
matches remaining.
At 160 pounds. West senior
William Stanley defeated Darren
Bozano to tie the team score at 24
24.
However, West Brunswick for
feited the 171-pound division to
Socastee's Randy Sinclair and the
Braves led 30-24. Sinclair was later
named the tournament's most out
standing wrestler.
Socastee clinched the match when
189-pounder Jason Mclchione de
feated West Brunswick freshman
Cliff Gore. 8-2.
"1 told the boys before the match
it was going to come down to the
last two weight classes and that's
what happened," Noble said. "For a
freshman. Cliff wrestled well. It was
a learning experience for him."
At heavyweight West Brunswick
sophomore Kwab?*na Green pinned
Jamie Helms in 1:06 to run his sea
son record to 11 -0. Green's team
mate. senior heavyweight Steve
Brooks, was 10-1 through last week.
Other top individual performers
for the Trojans include Jackson at
17-1, Stanley at 13-1, Mitchell at
17-2, Andreis at 14-5 and Barry
Johnson at 13-7.
West Brunswick, 6-0 against
county opponents tins season al 8-8
overall, defeated South Brunswick
41-29 and North Brunswick 54-21
on Saturday.
Wrestlers from West. South and
North will face off again this
Saturday at the Brunswick County
High School Wrestling Tournament
at 10 a.m. in the South Brunswick
gym.
West Brunswick was scheduled to
tune up tor the county tournament
with a home match Wednesday
against Wilmington Hoggard. The
I'rojans open the state dual team
playoffs next Tuesday, Feb. I.
