Leland Man Indicted In Belville Memorial Park Stabbing Murder The man arrested in the fatal stabbing of a Wilmington woman in Belville Jan. 8 was indicted on a first-degree murder charge by a Brunswick County Grand Jury last week. Nolan Anthony Dukes, 26, of Village Road. Leland. is accused of repeatedly slashing and stabbing 33-year old Bertha Mae Patterson with a 6-to-8-inch knife after a late-night argument on the future site of the town's John D. I>ong Memorial Park Dukes was arrested less than ten hours after a N.C. Wildlife officer spotted Patterson's blood-stained body laying face-up in a clearing. Investigators said Dukes and Patterson had gone out together the previous evening. Patterson's slaying was Brunswick County's first murder of 1994. Also indicted by the grand jury last week were: |?limmy Randall Faulk. 19, of Magnolia Street. Seaside, on one charge of first-degree rape of a child un der the age of 13 and one count of taking indecent liber ties with a child. The offenses are alleged to have oc curred Sept. 10. ?Michael Anthony Melton. 36, of Lincoln Road, Leland. on two counts of taking indecent lilieriies with a girl less than 16 years of age. The incidents allegedly ?Curtis Pigott Jr., 30. of Smithfield on two counts of discharging a firearm into occupied property. He is ac cused of shooting a "Tech 9" semi-automatic handgun into two homes on McMilly Road. Shallotte, last Feb. 27. ?Shirley Cause Pigott. 54, of Smithfield on 'v.o counts of discharging a firearm into occupied property. She is charged with Curtis Pigott ir. the Feb. 27 shooting incidents. ?fimothy Earl Street. 40, of John T. Holden Road, Supply, on six counts of receiving stolen property. He is accused of accepting nearly $5,000 worth of fishing tackle, tools, electronics and other items stolen in a string of local break-ins last summer. ?Frankie Joe Cuthbert, 27, of Summer Trail, Supply, on two counts each of breaking and entering and larce ny. He is accused of breaking into the Brunswick Electric Membership Corp. yard on U.S. 17 twice last Sept. 14. He is also charged with stealing a full-size pickup truck and tools valued at $10,000 and a Ford Ranger pickup truck valued at $8,000. ?Gregory Anthony Hill, 24, of Hale Swamp Road. Shallotte. on three counts of larceny and one charge of breaking and entering. He is believed io have broken in to a cold storage building at Lloyd's Oyster House at happened in October, 1991. Southport, and stealing S4(H) worth of jewelry and cash last Nov. 21. Allen is also charged with having in her possession $1,335 worth of property stolen from a local consign ment shop. ?Tina L. Allen, 22, of Stuart Avenue. Southport on one count of possession of stolen goods. She is accused with Oma Allen in the possession of the stolen consign ment shop property. ?Vanessa Brown Everett. 37. of Leland on one count each of welfare fraud and medical assistance recipient fraud. She is accused of accepting SI.262 in Aid to Families with Dependent Children and $646 in medical assistance after failing to report that she had been hired for a job that made her ineligible to collect the benefits. ? 1'riRiniy Kathlene Hewett, 35. of Cedar Landing Road. Supply, on a charge of food stamp fraud for al legedly collecting $3,313 worth of food stamps to which she was not entitled hy failing to disclose that her daughter has not resided in her household since June 1990. ?Kevin Raynard McCracken, 27, of Clarendon Avenue, Southport. on one count each of possession with intent to sell and deliver .2 grams of cocaine, sale and deliver of cocaine and maintaining a 19KK BMW automobile for the purpose of keeping and selling con trolled substances. ?Alvin Rodney Phelps, 42, of St. George Street, Southport. on one count each of possession with intent to sell and deliver cocaine and selling and delivering a controlled substance. ?lames Edison (iarrell. 35. of Walker Street. Iceland, on one count each of possession with intent to sell and deliver marijuana and maintaining a dwelling to keep and sell controlled substances. He was allegedly arrested by Brunswick County Sheriff's Department narcotics of ficers with more than a pound of marijuana in his pos session last Aug. 2(). ?I'atricia Lynn West. 34. of Walker Street. Lcland. on one count each of possession with intent to sell and de liver marijuana and maintaining a dwelling to keep and sell control substances. She was charged along with Garrell. Three Minor Break-Ins Reported In Styron's Landing Subdivision Numerous small items were stolen in three apparently related break-ins discovered in the Styron's landing subdivision next to Sea Aire Estates near Holden Beach last week, according to a report on file at the Brunswick County Sheriff's Department Monday. Deputy Marshall Evans was called to investigate a theft on Triton Drive that apparently occurred sometime between 8:15 a.m. and 6:45 p.m. Thursday. The thief or thieves pried open a bedroom win dow to get inside, then left through the front door. It looked as though all the closets and cabinets had been gone through, Evans reported. Missing were two mini-bottles of liquor and miscella neous toys, audio cassettes and videocassettes. While investigating the first break-in, Evans noticed a front door ajar on another mobile home on nearby Creswell Place. His investi gation determined that nothing was missing from the second home. CRIME REPORT Saturday afternoon. Deputy Johnny F.arp Jr. was called to inves tigate a third incident at a summer home on Nautilus Lane in Styron's Landing. It appeared that the sus pects scrapcd the putty away from the glass in a rear door, then re moved the glass to get inside. Missing were two jackets, some blankets and a pair of shoes valued at about S68. In other crime reports: ?Uninvited visitors caused an es timated $380 damage to a home on Folly Drive in River Run Plantation sometime in the past month. The Riegelwood man who owns the home said everything was in order when he was there in December. He told Deputy Rebekah McDonald that he came back to do some yard work and found a screen lying on the deck and a window pried open.
