Trojans Finally Tame Cougars; Snap Four-Year Losing Streak BY DOUG RUTTER The West Brunswick boys' bas ketball team ended four years of frustration ai the nanus of the South Brunswick Cougars by playing well for 16 minutes Saturday night. The Trojans poured in 20 points in the first quarter and 21 points in the third period en route to a 56-45 win in Boiling Spring latkes. The victory snapped West's seven-game losing streak to South dating back to 1990. "I'm tickled to death we won the game, especially over here," first year West Brunswick Coach Charlie Stevens said. "I thought our kids played real well. I'm tickled pink." Junior guard Erie Johnson scored 14 points to lead four West Bruns wick starters in double figures. An thony Moody scored 12 and Derek Frink and Timothy Daniels added 11 each. Scootei Moore scored 12 points and l^ewis Vaught had 10 to lead the Cougars, who did everything they could to slow down the tempo against the athletic Trojans. Moore, who scored all of his points after coming off the bench in the second half, saw his first signifi cant playing time since re-joining the Cougars last week. He was acad emically ineligible last semester. "They outplayed us," South Brunswick Coach Gene Doane said following the game. "Charlie out coached me. Me did a heck of a job." "Wo h:t?l our opportunities hut we couldn't overcome them," Doane added. "Every time we challenged them they fought us off. They were road warriors. We won the one mile, but they won the marathon." South Brunswick's only lead, 2-0, came before the game really started. Mike Clark made two free throws after West Brunswick was whistled for a technical foul for dunking dur ing pre-game warmups. The Trojans scored the next six points, including two on a legal slam dunk by Moody just 56 seconds into the first quarter. and West Brunswick was off and running. South Brunswick did a good job of slowing the pace in the sccond quarter and held the Trojans to no field goals and just three free throws. West led 23-17 at halftime. Johnson scored 10 of his game-high 14 points during the third quarter. The Trojans led 45-27 early in the fourth quarter before the Cougars mounted a tinal charge. However, the Trojans regained momentum with a three-point play by Moody with 1:56 left. Moody scored eight points in the final peri od as West held off the Cougars. Several times. West seemed to be on the verge of pulling away from South Brunswick but couldn't make the Cougars go away. Coach Stevens said he wasn't disappointed with the final score. "The sign of a good team is you can't blow them out," Stevens said of South Brunswick. "You shouldn't be able to run right by u well-coached team," he said. "If you blow out a team, it's ei ther because they are not a good %v*im or they urc not \V2!! cjuchcJ With the victory. West Brunswick improved to 4-2 in the Waccamaw Conference and 6-9 overall. South Brunswick fell to 1-5 in the confer ence and 4-11 overall. The Trojans were scheduled to host North Brunswick on Tuesday, travel to South Columbus Friday and host North Myrtle Beach on Saturday. South Brunswick will travel to Wilmington Hoggard for a non-con ference game Friday. The Cougars return to Waccamaw Conference ac tion next Tuesday with a home game against West Columbus. Trojan JV Grabs First League Win Ricky Mill scored 28 points to lead the West Brunswick junior var sity basketball team to its first Wac camaw Conference win of the year last Tuesday, a 79-72 victory over visiting West Columbus. Corey Hill scored 16 points, Ja mal Stanley added 15 and Juan Bellamy chipped in 11 for the Trojans. In more recent action. South Brunswick defeated West 60-38 Saturday in Boiling Spring Lakes. Devon Johnson led the Cougars with 19 points, while Bellamy scored 10 and Stanley had nine for the Trojans. The Trojans dropped an 87-58 de cision last Thursday at Wilmington Lanev. Bellamy scored 22 points and Stanley had 11 to lead West Brunswick. Aubrey Baham scored 21 points to pace the Buccaneers. West Brunswick entered this week's play with a 1-6 record in the Waccamaw Conference and an over all mark of 2-9. Laney Buccaneers Sweep West Wilmington L-ancy swept visiting West Brunswick in non-conference boys' and girls' high school basket hall action last Thursday. Derek McSwain scored 19 points and Adrian McCrae added 15 to lead the Lanev hoys to an 86-50 blowout of the Trojans. Laney's girls won 37-25 behind Tericka Grady's 10 points. In the boys' game, the Buc caneers jumped out to a 24-7 lead after one quarter and never looked back. The Bucs made nine three pointers in the contest, led by McCrae's three. Anthony Moody scored 10 points and Jonathan Williams added nine to lead West Brunswick, which fell to 5-9 overall. Laney improved to 8-7. The I.aney girls (12-3) also jumped on West Brunswick quickly and took a 16-6 lead after one quar ter. Senior center Nicole Norris led West Brunswick (5-9) with 19 points.
