Donald Jesse Wood, 78, of
Raines, S.C., died Wednesday, Feb.
2. at the Marion County Conva
lescent Center after an illness.
Born Sept. 1, 1915, in Longs, he
was a son of the late Julius and
Betty Fogey Lewis. He was a retired
tobacco farmer.
Survivors include four half-broth
ers, Otto Lewis and Elroy Lewis,
both of North Myrtle Bcach, S.C.,
J.P. Ixwis of Holden Beach, and
Hdmond Lewis of Charleston; and a
half-sister, Alta Powell of Conway.
A memorial service was held Feb.
5 at North Myrtle Beach Assembly
of God with the Rev. Jimmy Hodge
officiating. Burial was in the North
Myrtle Beach Memorial Gardens.

He was born on Long Island,
N.Y., April 29, 1921, the son of the
late George and Margaret Murphy
Hannigan. He was preceded in death
by his brother, John Hannigan.
He was a member of the Wilm
ington Parkinson Disease Support
Group; a former deacon in the
Northport Presbyterian Church in
Long Island. N.Y.; a Boy Scout
troop leader; and veteran of World
War II, serving in the U.S. Navy.
Surviving are his wife Betty
Hannigan of the home; his son, Ro
bert Hannigan Jr. and wife Irene of
Lexington, Mass.; a grandson, Ted
Hannigan of Lexington, Mass.; and
a brother, George Hannigan of Albu

Trains 10 lutors
The Brunswick County Literacy
Council kicked oft the new year by
training 10 volunteers to help im
prove the literacy skills of low-level
readers.
I*hc volunteers were trained in the
1 rubach Way to Reading, a phonics
based method of teaching reading,
during a 10-hour workshop Jan. 28
19. Trainer Susan figgert led the
workshop at Town Creek Park, as
sisted by apprentice Teddy Altreuter.
The newly trained tutors are being
matched with adults .ind teens in
Brunswick County who wish to im
prove their literacy skills.

care center employees and others re
sponsible for the care of children.
The series includes seven American
Red Cross courses as well as an ex

quirements for child care workers.
Continuing education units will be
awarded, and some courses may of
fer certification for those who pass a
standardized exam.
