Deaths And Funerals EVELYN VIRGINIA DUKES Evelyn Virginia Dukes, 91, of Autumn Care, Shallottc, died Feb. X at The Brunswick Hospital. Graveside services were held Feb. 11 in Union Cemetery, Newport, Tenn. BERNARD LEE THOMAS Bernard Lee "Bernie" Thomas of Yaupon Beach died Feb. 7 at Pin nacle Care Center, Wilmington, (iraveside services were held Feb. 10 at Northwood Cemetery. He was the son of the late Gomcr H. and Winifred P. Thomas, born in Larling, W.Va. He was commissioned as a sec ond lieutenant in the Military Intelligence Corps and was the first American to study under the British Photo Reconaissance School. During World War II he participated in the major Allied invasions and served as assistant director of intelli gence at U.S. Strategic and Tactical Air Force Headquarters, and as an instructor at the Military Intelligence Training Center. At the end of World War II, he was discharged but was recalled to service for the Korean Conflict, when he again instructed Photo Reconaissance. He was discharged as a captain in 1953. His military awards and decorations include the Bronze Star and campaign ribbons with five battle stars and two inva sion arrowheads. He was with Eastern Associated Coal Corp. as manager of coal pro curement. He was a member of Saint Peter E.V. Lutheran Church. Surviving are his wife, Nell Logan-Evans Thomas, and step daughter, iean Logan-Evaii!> Rich of New York City. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to Saint Peter E.V. Lutheran Church, Southport. GEORGE ALTON LUDLUM George Alton Ludlum, 69, of Bricklar.diug Rnnr!, ShaHnite, died Feb. 8 at home. He was born in Brunswick County on May 4, 1924, and was the son of the late Mansey and Myrtle Stanley Ludlum. He was a U.S. Army veteran serving during World War II. He was preceded in death by his wife, Levener Ann Ludlum, on Aug. 12, 1992. He is survived by a stepdaughter, Delia Norris of Shallotte: two step sons, John Shaw of Dover, Pa., and Sterling Clough of Crisfield, Md.; two brothers, Malloney Ludlum of Charleston, S.C., and Lenzy Ludlum of Shallotte; five sisters, Ava Dixon of Varnamtown, Geneva Grissett of Grissettown, Irene Walton of Wilm ington, Ruby Mercer of Bolivia and Vera Hewett of Supply; and six step grandchildren. Funeral services were held Feb. 12 at Coble Ward-Smith Funeral Service Chapel, Supply, with the Rev. Bob Hall officiating. Burial was in the Davis Register Cemetery. J.W. "BUNCIE" JAMES J.W. "Buncie" James of Carolina Beach died Feb. 8 at his residence. He was born in Southport on April 16, 1913, the son of the late James Williams and Bessie McKeithan James. He served in the Merchant Marines during World War II. He became a resident of Carolina Beach in 1960 and retired from Babcock and Wilcox in 1975 after 22 years of service. Surviving are his wite ot 50 vears. Christina Hall James of the home; his children, Joan James Hamilton of Daytona Beach, Fla., Joseph W. FREDRICK LEE LEWIS Fredrick "Freddy" Lee Lewis, 20 of Sawdust lusnc. Winnabow, died Feb. 10. He was born in New Hanover County Nov. 28, 1973, the son of Edward Lee and Ruby Huffman Lewis of the home. He was a gradu ate of South Brunswick High School. Survivors in addition to his par ents include his sister, Patricia Ixwis Mason and husband l^arrv of Winnabow; paternal grandparents, Fred and Gladys McDowell I>ewis of Winnabow; maternal grandpar ents Benjamin Bryant Huffman Sr. and Wilma Hewett Huffman of Winnabow; two nieces, Teri and Christy Mason; and two nephews. Jesse and Cody Mason. Funeral services were held Feb. 14 at Mill Creek Baptist Church with the Rev. Merle Martin and the Rev. Rocky Gregory officiating. Burial was in the Bowling Family Cemetery. ARCHIE TALMON SELLERS Archie Talmon Sellers of Inland died Feb. 10 at the Brunswick Cove Care Center. He was born in Brunswick County Nov. 24, 1922, the son of the late Charlie Richmond and Annie Ruth Swain Sellers. He was a mem ber of the Leland Baptist Church and retired from the Timmie Corporation after 20 years of ser vice. He was preceded in death by his wife, Lois Meekins Sellers. Surviving are three sons, Jimmy Dale Sellers and wife Dale of Texas, Donald T. Sellers and wife Maijorie of Leiand and Archie "Cilau" Sellers and wife Sheila of Leland; two brothers, Claude R. WILLIAM LYON CLARK William Lyon Clark, 81, of Win nabow died Feb. 9 in Cape Fear Memorial Hospital. He was born Aug. 4, 1912, in Columbus County, the son of Mrs. Janie Eugenia Sue Clark of Southport and the late Lyon Porter Clark. He was a member of the Zion United Methodist Church at Win nabow and had retired from the Wilmington Fertilizer Company. He was preceded in death by two broth ers. Clifford and Roland Clark. Survivors, in addition to his mother, include his wife, Rebecca Inez Tharp Clark of the home; two sons. Robert Hayden Clark and Darry Ray Clark and a daughter, Gloria Kay Pfister Phillips, all of Leland; brothers Durwood Clark and Van Clark of Leland and Penn Clark of Whiteville; a sister, Mildred Lynch of Hope Mills; eight grandchildren and four great-grand children. Memorial services were held Feb. 13 in Zion United Methodist Church by the Rev. Billy Peele. Burial will be in the church cemetery. BLANCHE ELLEN PIGOTT GURGANIOUS Blanche Ellen Pigott Gurganious of Wilmington died Feb. 10 in Davis Health Care Center. She was born in Brunswick County on March 5, 1907, the daughter of the late Frederick William and Emma Jane Leonard Pigott, and was preceded in death by her husband, Floyd Gurganious. Surviving are her daughters, Grace G. Hobbs, Jane Carr and Nancy Rumple of Wilmington and Susa" Gordon of Cranium, N.J., a son, Edward L. Gurganious of Wilmington; a brother. VICTORIA JEANETTE HEWETT SMITH Victoria Jeanette Hewett Smith, S3, of Supply died Feb. 12 at her residence. A Brunswick County na tive, she was a daughter of the late Troy and Florence Jane Frink Hew ett. She was preceded in death by her husband. George D. Smith; and three sons. D. Hoover Smith, George C. (Sam) Smith and Wendell Smith. She was a member of Supply Baptist Church. Surviving are a son, George Dewey Smith Jr. of Tyler, Texas; two daughters. McLamb, 81, of Little River, S.C., died Feb. 14 at his residence after an illness. Tne funeral was Feb. 55 at First Baptist Church in North Myrtle Beach, S.C., with the Rev. He was a member and lifelong honorary deacon of First Baptist Church of North Myrtle Beach and a life member of Masonic Lodge No. 392 of North Myrtle Beach. In the early 1930s he helped construct the Atlantic Intracoastal Waterway un der the supervision of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. During World War 11 he worked in the Charleston Navy Yard helping repair war-dam aged Navy vessels. After the water, in 1947, Mr. McLamb returned to the Little River and went into private business as a general contractor and developer, working along the eastern seaboard until his retirement in 1984. Survivors include his wife, Stella Mae Bellamy McLamb; two sons. Thurmon W. McLamb and Kenny E. McLamb, both of Little River; two daughters, Rita June McLamb and Pollie M. Moseley, both of Little River; a brother, Aaron D. McLamb; two sisters. Lessie Hardee and Shel lie Somerset, both of Brunswick; six grandchildren; and three great grandchildren. Born in Kannapolis July 2, 1922, she was the daughter of Frankie Mac Sowers Wampler of Myrtle Beach and the late Roy Forth Wampler. She was owner/operator of several general merchandise, arts and crafts shops in the Little River area. Survivors include two sons, David Graham Hobson and wife Janice of California. Md., and Donald Cary Hobson and wife Michelle of Supply; a brother. Roy W. "Bill" Wampler of Colorado Springs. Colo.; and six grandchil dren.
