Team A, made up of seventh and eighth grade students, qualified by placing fourth in the regional Science Olympiad held Feb. 5 at l.aney High School in Wilmington, said Darrell Cheers, one of the team's coaches. The top five teams automatically advance to state com petition. Shallotte Middle was the only Brunswick County school to enter district competition, entering two 15-member teams this year. Last year, its first year in the Olympiad, the school sent one team. Science Olympiad features a vari ety of events that give students an opportunity to apply their science knowledge and ability to specific, hands-on projects. For some entries, students build devices, such as the energy converter Shallotte Middle's team expects to prepare for the state contest. This year both Shallotte teams finished in the top 10 at regionals. B Team, composed mainly of sixth graders, placed 10th in the field of 18 teams from across a nine-county area of southeastern North Carolina. I .eland Middle and Waccamaw Elementary were registered for the competition but did not participate. Team A entered every one of the 21 events offered, from Science Crime Busters to the Pentathlon, picking up additional points with two first place finishes, one second place and four fourth-place finishes. Most were team competitions requir ing two to four participants each. Ib uo weii iii llic Silence Olym piad. team member Ionia Jackson said, "You have to know a lot of oth er core subjects." "You get to be real creative and try to do things without a leather telling you what to do," said Trest. She and Jaime Atwell drew on their knowledge and ability in a broad range of subjects to finish first in "What Are You Trying to Tell Me." a general test of scientific knowledge and application in both the physical and life sciences. "It was a written test," said Trest. "We were surprised. We thought it would be questions they would ask us. There was no way you could prepare ahead for it." The two were required to compu tate math solutions, read and inter pret scientific writings as well as an swer direct questions. Shallotte Middle's foursome didn't win Pentathlon, which re quired more than scientific knowl edge. "It required physical agility and dexterity as well," said Jackson. Some advance practice paid off for Jaime Atwell. C'hrissy llewett and Jackson in "Picture This," a Pic tionary-type game in which team mates take turns illustrating assigned scientific terms such as "air pollu tion" and "DNA" and having fellow team members guess the term. Atwell said the trio worked out in advance a set of symbols to use. es pecially for suffixes and prefixes. For "geo-," for instance, they used the shape of a Chevrolet Geo, while "chemical" was represented by a beaker. In Science Crime Busters. Jennifer Bailey and Chrissy llewett, a last minute substitute, placed first by quickly solving a "crime" using clues such as a list of suspects and their alibis, a description of the crime and crime scene, and results of lab tests on hair, fibers and liquids. "it was fur.," said Jennifer. Team participation in the Olym piad was supported by the UNCW based Southeast Partnership. N.C. Science and Mathematics Alliance. HEJgg Saunders, O.D. FAMILY OPTOMETRY ?
