Brunswick County Sending Six
To State Wrestling Tournament
BY douc; rutter
Six high school wrestlers will represent
Brunswick County at the North Carolina Slate
Championships to be held Friday and Saturday at
the Greensboro Coliseum.
Three from West Brunswick will compete in
the 3A tournament, while three from North
Brunswick tangle in the I A/2 A event. There were
no state qualifiers from South Brunswick.
To qualify for the individual state champi
onships, wrestlers had to finish fourth or better at
the eastern regional competition held last week
end at Williamston.
Among the local contingent leaving for
Greensboro on Thursday will be West Brunswick
senior William Stanley, who finished second in
the region at 160 pounds and narrowly missed
winning the regional crown.
Also representing the Trojans at the 3A tour
nament will be Ja Mitchell, who placed third in
the eastern region at 145 pounds, and Steve
Brooks, who finished fourth in the heavyweight
division.
Three North Brunswick wrestlers will com
pete in the IA/2A championships. Finishing
fourth at the regional tournament were seniors
Mike Ganey at 135 pounds and Josh Chadwick at
152 and sophomore Adam King at 1X9.
West Brunswick Coach Joe Noble said
Tuesday he's not sure how his three wrestlers will

anything like the eastern
regiony it's going to be
very tough."

"I don't know what the rest of the state is
like," Noble said. "If the rest of the state is any
thing like the easte;(. region, it's going to be very
tough."
Noble, who took five wrestlers to the state
tournament last year, said West Brunswick's
move from the 2A classification to the larger 3A
level this year was evident at the regional tourna
ment.
"3A is a different world," he said. "I feel fun
damentally we're on the same level with the other
schools, but strength-wise we're behind."
"We had a long talk on the bus coming back
Sunday and talked about what we need to do next
year in terms of weight training and conditioning.
We've already started on it."

to the state tournament, placing fifth in the 125
pound division. As a team. West Brunswick fin
ished ninth in the region out of 24 teams.
Stanley won his first two matches by pin be
fore winning a 6-4 decision in the semifinals. In
the regional finals, Stanley lost 6-5 after his oppo
nent was awarded four penalty points for stalling.
Mitchell pinned his first two opponents before
surrendering a pin late in the third period of his
third-round match. He came back with another
win by pinfall in the consolation bracket and won
the consolation finals 13-11.
Brooks also came through the consolation
bracket after winning his first two matches and
losing his third-round match 4-0. The 270-pound
senior posted a 6-0 win before losing in the con
solation finals.
North Brunswick Coach Mike Dumas said, "I
was really impressed with Adam and Josh. I felt
sure that Mike was going to go."
Dumas said one of the highlights of the tour
nament was King's takedown of the regional
champion at 1X9 pounds, a wrestler from
Currituck who had not surrendered a takedown all
season.
"Chadwick also wrestled very well against the
eventual winner of his weight class," Dumas
added. "He just took his time and wrestled very
smart. He more or less used good technique and
smart wrestling."
