toward hope and opportunity."
Soles is serving his ninth term in
the Senate and his first as deputy
president pro tempore. He is vice
chairman of the Judiciary II Com
mittee and is a member of the
Agriculture. Marine Resources and
Wildlife; Hanks and Thrift Institu
tions: Economic Development: Fin
ance; Insurance. Pensions and
Retirement; Public Utilities; Rules
and Operations of the Senate: Ways

Batten Re-Elected
David J. Batten, executive vice
president and general manager of
Brunswick Electric Membership
Corp.. was re-elected to the board of
the National Rural Telecommun
ications Cooperative as director of
District 1.
Batten is an incorporating mem
ber of NRTC and two-term past
president of the board of directors.
The NRTC addresses the telecom
munications needs of rural America.
Batten has served in the rural elec
tric program for 22 years.
On Elon Dean's List
Stephen Matthew Lancaster, son
of Mr. and Mrs. Joseph W. Lancaster
of Supply, was named to the dean's
list for the fall semester at Elon
College.
The dean's list is composed of
students with no grade below B and
a grade point average of at least 3.4

Board Selects Mildred Bellamy
As Second School Social Worker
Mildred Bellamy of Supply was hired as a school so
cial worker by the Brunswick County Board of
Education Monday night, doubling the system's social
worker staff.
Most recently employed by Lower Cape Fear
Hospice, Bellamy was previously a longtime employee
of the Brunswick County Department of Social Ser
vices. She also works part-time as an instructor at
Brunswick Community College.
l"he school system hasn't had a second social work
er on staff since the 1990-91 school year.
Funds for the position came from the post vacated
with the retirement ot Freeman Clause, former commu
nity schools coordinator and attendance counselor, said
Oscar Blanks, assistant superintendent for support ser
vices.
"We lelt in these times a social worker would be
helpful in drop-out prevention." Blanks said Tuesday.
"We felt we needed more contact, that we needed to
work with both children and their families."
Fauna Schaub of Bolivia was also hired as a school
social worker for the Chapter I/Migrant Education pro
gram.
Claudia l*augisch of Lawton. Okla., was hired .is a
diagnostician on the central office staff. She was previ
ously employed by the local school system as an excep
tional children's teacher at Union Elementary School in
Shallotte.
Also hired were Carolyn Sharpe. Southport, interim
middle grade teacher. South Brunswick Middle; tempo
rary five-hour remediation teacher Rebecca McDowell.

Band Students In Concert
Saturday At North Brunswick
A public concert will be held Saturday, Feb. 19, at 7
p.m. at North Brunswick High School in [.eland featur
ing the All Brunswick County Middle School and High
School bands
The concert will lollow a two-day band clinic for se
lected students from .ill county high schools and middle
schools, according to Steve Skillman, the school sys
tem's cultural .iits coordinator.
Originally scheduled .it I .eland Middle School, the
concert was moved to the high school because of a
booking conflict.
A show is planned at 7 p.m. in the Lcland Middle
School Cafeteria to IxMiefit Helping Hands, a not-for
profit group that provides home repairs and winteriza
tion for households that don't qualify for other pro
grams.
