Soles, D- 1 ISth District, to serve as co chair of the Extra Session Select Commit tee on Courts. The commit tee will review a variety of legis lation including soi.ks clarification of allocation of victims' compensation funds. Drug Court programs and justic information sys tems. "Governor Hunt and the people of North Carolina have challenged us to act affirmatively to reduce crime," Soles said. Batten, executive vice president and general manager of Brunswick Electric Membership Corp.. was re-elected to the board of the National Rural Telecommun ications Cooperative as director of District 1. Batten is an incorporating mem ber of NRTC and two-term past president of the board of directors. The NRTC addresses the telecom munications needs of rural America. Batten has served in the rural elec tric program for 22 years. On Elon Dean's List Stephen Matthew Lancaster, son of Mr. and Mrs. Joseph W. Most recently employed by Lower Cape Fear Hospice, Bellamy was previously a longtime employee of the Brunswick County Department of Social Ser vices. She also works part-time as an instructor at Brunswick Community College. l"he school system hasn't had a second social work er on staff since the 1990-91 school year. Funds for the position came from the post vacated with the retirement ot Freeman Clause, former commu nity schools coordinator and attendance counselor, said Oscar Blanks, assistant superintendent for support ser vices. "We lelt in these times a social worker would be helpful in drop-out prevention." Blanks said Tuesday. "We felt we needed more contact, that we needed to work with both children and their families."
