11 Students Win Blue Ribbons
In District Arts Competition
Eleven local students won blue ribbons
Saturday at a district arts festival in Clinton and
will advance to the N.C. Federation of Women's
Clubs state student arts festival.
The state festival will be held March 26 in
Winston-Salem, said Kathy Ross, a member of
the Shallotte Junior Woman's Club.
The 11 students were among 16 top finishers
in the Shallotte Junior Woman's Club j*rt tw.tivnl
and scholarship competition held Feb. 7 at West
Brunswick High School. Students from Wac
camaw Elementary, Shallotte Middle and West
Brunswick High schools participated.
Earning first place in local and district compe
tition in literature were Tiffany Skaggs. Wac
camaw. poetry, 7th-.Sth grade: Aimee Duncan.
West Brunswick, poetry, ilth-12th grade; Linda
Creech. West Brunswick, poetry, 9th-lt)th grade;
\1inde Vince. West Brunswick, fiction. 11th-12th
grade; Lolita Bryant. Shallotte Middle, fiction.
7th-Sth grade; Kenny McGee. West Brunswick,
non-fiction newspaper. 9th-l()th grade; Rachel N.
Swain, West Brunswick, non-fiction. 11th! 2th
grade; and Ashely Hardy, Shallotte Middle, non
fiction, 7th-Kth grade.
Also claiming top hoiiots in both events were
West Brunswick students Charles Price, for
mixed media art; Michael Cunningham for an
Indian style woven wall hanging, "Dream
Catcher," and Heather Hilton, in sewing, for a
three-piece suit.
Three other students won blue ribbons in lo
cal competition, hut not district. Thev were I fit'll
Everette Milligan, Waccamaw Elementary, water
color; Aimee Duncan, West Brunswick, chalk;
and Heather Kirby, West Brunswick, papercraft;
and Chris Sapps. ceramics, for an African head.
Jessica Benton, a senior at West Brunswick
High School, won the Shallotte club's Beverly S.
Morris Scholarship, worth SI,300. Based on acad
emic achievement and need, the award is named
after a past club president who was killed in an
automobile accident.
Kathy Ross and Dayna Ramsey-Sanders coor
dinated the arts festival for the Shallotte Junior
Woman's Club. Judges were Owen Weddle, dean
of general education, and staff, Brunswick
Community College, literature; Bunny Lauzon,
Pen in Redwine and D.L. Anderson, ait.

Hewett, who wants to be a band
director, is a student teacher at
Carver Middle School in the
Scotland County School System.

Fraternity. She has served as presi
dent o! the Collegiate Music Edu
cators National Conference and has
