PEOPLE IN THE NEWS Simmons Is Named To Fellows Board Jo Ann Simmons of Ash has been named to the N.C. Teaching Fellows Commission bv Lt. Gov. Dennis A. Wicker. She will assist the commission in awarding college scholarships to North Carolina's top high school students interested in becoming teachers. "Jo Ann's background and experi ence in education will help the com mission accomplish its goal of en suring that 2!! our children h^vp ex cellent teachers in years to come." Wicker said. The Fellows program was begun in 19X7. It awards 400 students four year, $20,000 scholarships to study education at 15 colleges and univer sities statewide. Applicants must be North Carolina residents. To repay the state-funded award, scholars must commit to teaching in North Carolina's public schools for four years.
