Parkers I II Cougars Bounce West Brunswick; Earn Share Of Championship BY DOUG RUTTKR South Brunswick High wrapped up a share of its third straight Waccamaw Conference girls' bas ketball championship Friday night with a 49-25 win over host West Brunswick. The l.ady Cougars finished the regular season 9-3 in the conference and tied for first place with White ville. which beat Hast Columbus 5l> 48 on Friday to earn a piece of the league title. The conference title came as somewhat of a surprise to South Brunswick Coach Mike Isenberg. who was unsure of his team at the start of the season with just two ex perienced players back from last year's 26-1 squad. "Needless to say I'm tickled to death with what we've done after losing our whole lineup last year." Isenberg said following Friday night's win. South, which has won two straight conference tournaments, en tered this week's tourney with an overall record of 15-8. The Lady Cougars will receive the Wacca maw's number one 3A seed in the upcoming state playoffs. Last Friday's win at West Brunswick avenged a 69-67 triple overtime loss to the Lady Trojans earlier this season in Boiling Spring l.akes. The Lauy Cougars "neid a i2-point halftimc lead in that game on Jan 29, and led by the same margin last Friday at West. "When we had that 12-point lead at halftime all I had to tell them was how many points we were ahead in the last game." I sen berg said. "I stressed to them how important the third quarter was." South Brunswick turned a 26-14 halftime lead into a 40-21 lead at the end of the third quarter. The Lady Cougars never let up in the second half, and held their largest lead as the final horn sounded. Senior center Erika Bryant turned in a monster game for South Brunswick, pouring in 24 points and pulling down 15 rebounds. Fresh man Sheba full wood added 10 points for the I.ady Cougars. West Brunswick, which slipped to 5-7 in the Waccamaw Conference and 8-15 overall, was led by Nicole Norris with 10 points and Fclecia Morgan with eight. The Lady Trojans, who lost six of their last seven regular-season games, finished tied with South Columbus for fourth place in the conference. West will receive the Waccamaw's second state 3A play off seed unless Pender wins the league tournament. With Bryant leading the way. South Brunsw<ck dominated in the paint. Natalie Smith also helped in side with nine points while playing outstanding defense. The Lady Cougars led 10-8 late in the first quarter before pulling away with a 7-0 run that ended when Bryant rebounded a missed free throw and made the shot for a 17-8 "lead. A three-point play by Fullwood helped South Brunswick close the first half with a M-4 spurt and carry a 26-14 lead into the locker room.
